♦- — Personal. Tho postmaster, Mr J. X. Xeville, will bo on leave for a few weeks while undertaking electoral duties. Mr S. H. ■ Mason will bo acting-postmaster from to-day. Harbour Light Theatre. The many hundreds of people in Lvttelton who have read "East Lynne," or'have .seen the stage play, and those of the' younger generation who have not, will beinterested in the film adaptation of Mrs Henry Wood's famous novel to be presented at tho Harbour Light Theatro this afternoon and evening. In a superb Fox production, Isabel, Carlyle, Barbara, tho hated and other well-remeinbered characters of this old-time melodrama, live onco more, and the story is as poignantly told as ever it was in the novel or on tho stage. Tho supporting feature is "The Great K. and A. Train Robbery," starring Tom Mix, and a comedy and gazette will also bo-shown. "Tho Joy Girl." featuring Olive Borden and "Tony Runs Wild," starring Tim Mix, will be screened to-morruw afternoon and evening. Methodist Chujrch. The quarterly meeting of tho Lyttclton .Methodist Church was held on Friday evening in tho Sunday School Hall, the Rev. B. Dudley presiding over a fair attendance of office-bearers. Mr W. T. Foster,- circuit steward, acted as secretary. Tho members' roll showed an increase of three adults. It was decided not to make any alteration in tho hour of commencing the . Sunday oveniug services in, view of tho summer tim'o enactment. The peace manifesto sent down by tho denominational authorities wp- discussed, and a resolution thereon passed. Mr 1' Heal was appointed leader of the Sunday Morning Star Brigade. The invitation to the Rev. C. Blair to be pastor of the church in succession to the Rev. 8.. Dudley, who had stated that it was his intention to seek a change next year, was confirmed. It was reported that during the past two years over £2OO had.been expended on the church properties, and that more than £IOO had been laid out on the parsonage for a similar purpose. Messrs F. Coleman and W. T. Foster were appointed representatives to the Synod, with Mrs Huston and Mr J. Pitcaithly as substitutes. Arrangements were made for the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the church in November. 'Golf. Stroke matches were played at Charfceris Bay yesterday for trophies presented by Mr R. Anderson. In the men's match T. Patterson and R. Wilson tied. The ladies' match was won by Miss P. Plitnmer, Mrs R. Miller being the runner-up. Salvation Army. A musical festival was held in the Salva-' fion Army Hall on Saturday night, when the Ashburton Silver Band gave a'programme of instrumental and. vocal items.. There was a very large attendance. The i Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton) welcomed the band. The programme was as follows: —March, "The Glory, of the Combat," the band; piano duet, Miss E. Moore and Bandsman D. B.'M. Hayward; trombone solo, with band accompaniment,

"Sabbath Morn"; song, "Going Down the Valley." male voices; hymn, "Abido With Me," the band; selection, the Lyjttellon Band; instrumental quartette, "Clouds and Sunshine"; instrumental trio,- "Swiss Cradlo Song," Band Secretary Pidgeon. Bandsman D. B. M. Havward, and Miss E. Moore; march, "Ashburton," the band. Yesterday the Ashburton Band assisted at both morning and evening services. Commandant Rimmer, of Cbristchurch, conducted them, both being largely attended.
