A FIRM STAND.

OWNERS' MANIFESTO.

THE MARITIME DISPUTE.

MANY SHIPS HELD UP. (UNITED PEESS ASSOCIATION— BJ ELECTRIC TELEGBAPH —COPYBIGHT.) (Received September 11th, 10.20 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 11. Although many ports throughout the Commonwealth were idle to-day, hun-. dreds of watersiders ofered for work at Sydney and plenty of labour was avail- ! able for all vessels, no distinction being made for the steamers Baradine and Goulburn, which the men refused to work at the afternoon pick-up yesterday. The men show their objection, not to the ships or the line to which they belong, but to the whole principle. An official statement issued by overseas shipping representatives says: The overseas and inter-State shipping companies face two challenges, and accept both. One is the defiant tearing up of the new watersiders' award by ' the Watersiders' Federation, which we answer by taking a definite and final stand by the award, refusing to barter law and order for pieace and persistent " The second challenge is the question asked by Judge Beeby in. his recent judgment: "Will the -skipping -companies continue their policy of submission or take a firm stand ?' We answer that challenge as emphatically as the •first. The day of continual, enforced concession and piecemeal compromise is i f-nded. We stand as a united body arbitration as against anarchy, whether that anarchy be by repudiation or the whole award, or its- tearing up clause by clause. Reports from Brisbane; Hobart, Adelaide, Perth, and Fremantle state that no work was done,on'the waterfront today,' the men refusing employment at the morning, pick-up. - The Comorin. which arrived at Fremantle from Lon'don, had to continue her voyage; with-.. out discharging cargo.' With vthe exception of,the coal and Ta6manian ser- ' vic>es and the Patrick. Line. inter-State shipping is at a standstill and by tonight thousands of workers in Melbourne will be. idle.
