LAUNCHES ADRIFT.
THEFT AND MISCHIEF AT NEW BRIGHTON. The Pacific and the Waitea, two large power boats, units in the New Brighton Power Boat Club's fleet, were cut adrift from their moorings on Monday night, and yesterday morning they were found damaged and hard aground on mud banks. Each craft is valued at up..so-£IOOO. It seemed that an attempt had been mad© to steal the boats. Waitea is 36ft long and Pacific 34ft. The latter, owned by Mr L. A. Curtis, was found stranded on a mud bank downstream, and- noticing that Waitea had left her moorings also, Mr Curtis made a search, finding her aground some miles down in the Estuary. Considerable damage was done to both craft by the thieves, who broke .open the hatches, stole some of the gear, and threw the rest into the river. The engine of Pacific had been taken out for overhaul, and an attempt had been made to step a mast and sail her away. This makes Mr Curtis's third experience of having his boat cast adrift.
