RICCARfON. The Ricearton Borough Council met list evening: Present: Org. R. H. Rankin (DeputyMayor), R. g. Molcolmson, T. M. Ford, H. GudseU.H. Telford, R. Hepburn, L. Onnandy, and J. p. Peters. On the recommendation of tho Finance Committee, accounts amounting to £2226 J i? were P as sed for payment, and a grant of £5 was made to the funds of the Sumner Lifeboat Association. .. Clerk bo directed to write to * * J- asking if he would agree to dedicate land at th e corner of Clyde and Ricearton roads for the purpose of rounding the.corner, was adopted. The By-laws Committee's recommendations that the Town Clerk be directed to write to the Cnristchurch Drainage Boar*, asking that the Board defray the cost of reinstating the footpath in Puriri street, which was broken by the Board's well-sinkers, and that the inspector be authorised to emplov an assistant for some hours on the day of "the arrival of the Tasman flyers, were adopted. The Electricity Committee reported that the office building was progressing in a satisfactory manner, the strong-room was complete and the door in position. The foundation and floor were in for the new'substation and workshop in the Council yard. Poster street sub-station was under way. The foundation and cable and ventilating trenches were complete, and the walls were in the course of erection. The committee recommended that the Town Clerk bo directed to write to the Wharenui Bath Committee stating that the Council would be unable to pump out the bath in future, and asking tho committee to make arrangements for a connexion with the sewer. It further recommended that immediate steps be taken to raise the proposed loan of £9OOO for extension purposes; The report was adopted. The Department of Health wrote in connexion, with the drainage of Semple street. It stated that although the street was a privato one, nevertheless tho Department considered that steps should be taken by the Council to acquire the street, so that efficient surface drainage could be carried out. It was decided to refer tho matter to the works manager for a report. It was decided to make the annual grant of £l6 8s to the Canterbury Progress League. Mr F. Langbein, representative of the Highways Board, wrote informing the Council that it- had- been decided that the maintenance subsidy already paid to the Council was to bo on the basis of the expenditure by the counties on the adjacent length of highway for the period April Ist to November 30th, 1027. The Board had no legal power to vary the subsidy during that period. For tho period December Ist, 1927, to February 23rd, 1928, the Board had decided to pay the Council £306 3s 3d, being its actual expenditure on maintenance during that period. The letter was received.

NEW BRIGHTON. The New Brighton Borough Council met last night* Present: The Mayor (Mr A. W. Owles), and Crs. E. A. M. Leaver, F. D. Muirson, T. Robins, G. "W. Bishop, R. A. Stokes, A. E. Lawry, arid H. A. Glasson. Regarding the proposal to take an aerial survey af Chrfstclmroh and surrounding districts, ft was decided, to advise the City Engineer (Mr A. R. Galbraith) that the Borough "Council was prepared to pay its proportion of the cost—£9o. The Finance and By-laws Coinmitttee reported that at. the last meeting, Cr. Muir-Bon-moved that under the provisions of Section 8 of the Local Bodies Loans Act, 1926, the work under allocation (G) of the £52,000 loan for river protection being completed, that account be closed"and the balance standing to' tbo credit of that account viz., £364 6s ?d;-'be' transferred to -.the road construction allocation (A) of the said £52,000 loan account. The motion was seconded by Cr. Smith and' carried. SUMNER. A meeting of the Sumner. Borough Council was held last evening and was attended by the Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson) and Crs. F. 0. Cooper, H. W. Harris, C. I. Denham, A. Holden, C. J. "Wilson, T. Newburgh, "W. Henley, and B. J. Ager. - '.'_.'
