LYTTELTON NEWS.

I The Weather. Northerly weather, with frequent drenching showers, prevailed yesterday. There was practically no shipping, in port, so that the weather made little difference on the waterfront. A heavy sea is running on the East Coast. Masquerade Ball. What promises to be a most popular event will take place in the Olub Hall to-morrow night, when,a masquerade ball will be held. Prises -will be given for the best and most original fancy costumes. The ball has been organised to assist the Lyttelton Club's library fund. Methodist Mission. A ten days' Evangelistic Mission was 'begun at the Methodist Church on Sunday, the Rev. P. B. Lawrence, of Wooiston, being the preacher. Bis subjects, appropriately chosen, were greatly appreciated by the hearers. There were good congregations. Popular hymns were sung.

British. Sailors' Society. At - tbe monthly Board meeting of the British Sailors' Society, held at the Seamen's Institute last evening, the superintendent (Mr F. Mintey) reported that during the period July 28rd to August 26th, 20 officers and 935 men had visited the Institute; 15 ships had been visited, and three visits made to the hospital; 42 books and parcels of papers had been placed in the boats, and a loan of books made on two qf the coastal boats, whilst an exchange of 24 books had been effected in an overseas boat, five Sunday evening services had been held, with an attendance of 78, and two concerts, at which 60 were present, and one whist drive. One hundred and twenty-two letters had been received and posted, and five seamen assisted. Gifts of books and papers had been received from a number of friends, also gifts for Mr Mintey's social fund. Special thanks were accorded to Mr 0. J. Troleaven (Christchnrch) for entertaining cadets. Borough Council. The Lyttelton Borough 'Council met last evening. Present the Mayor (Mr F. E. Sutton)), Ors. A. McDonald, R. Fenton, M. J. Miller, W. W. Toy, 0. F. Bell, and W. Wales. Apologies were received from Crs; W. D. Gower, L. G. Matthews, and W. T. Foster. i An invitation to the Mayor and councillors to be present at the opening of the new golf pavilion at the Diamond Harbour links on Saturday next was accepted. The Canterbury Education Board wrote congratulating the Council on the highly satisfactory way in which the old gaol site had been converted into a Recreation Ground, and conveying to the Council, the Borough Engineer (Mr H. H. Barnard), and the Town Clerk (Mr F. Hobbs)' the Board's appreciation of their valuable services. The Mayor said it was gratifying to receive such a letter from the Education Board. The official .opening of the playground area would take place about September 22nd. The secretary of the Lyttelton Permanent Land Building and Investment Society wrote accepting the Council's offer of £550 for two stone houses and land- in Simeon quay, for ultimate street-widening purposes, payment to be made in April nest. The Canterbury Progress League wrote soliciting a renewal of the Council's annual subscription to the League of £ls. Cr. Miller moved that the grant be renewed. He said the League had done magnificent work for Canterbury. The motion was seconded by Cr. Fenton and carried. The St. John Ambulance Association invited the Council to be represented at the forty-third annual meeting of the Association to be held to-morrow, and asked for the renewal of the Council's subscription. On the motion of Cr. McDonald, seconded by Cr. Bell, it was resolved that a donation of £5 5s be made. .. ~ n' v The secretary of the Lyttelton Harbour Board (Mr C. H. Clibborn) wrote in reference to the granting of an area of the reclaimed land at Naval Poilft by the Board, to the Council, in regard to which a deputation from the Council waited upon the Board at its last meeting, and stated that .the following resolution had been passed by the Board: "That the previous resolution- (wherein it waß agreed to lease the land to the Counril for a period) be i scinded, and that this Board agrees to endeavour to get an Act of Parliament to give this land (recreation area) to the Lyttelton Borongh Council subject to the land being used for recreation purposes only, and to revert to the Board if not so used, and provided that the Lyttelton Borough Council pay the expenses incidental to such legislation." The letter stated that an endeavour would be made to get a Bill through Parliament during the present session. The Borough Engineer was instructed to prepare an estimate of the cost of erecting four swings of the latest typo at Corsair The Lighting Committee recommended that the Council join the Electrical Power Supply Association. The recommendation was adopted. . An application was received from G. B. Sansom for the Council's consent to the transfer of lease of the farm at Heathcote to Mr F D. Keid. It was decided that the. transfer be eranted as requested. The Council instructed the Town Clerk to draw the Public- Works Department's attention to the dangerous state _ of. the fence round the police sergeant's .residence. The Electrical Engineer's report on the street lighting of the borough was received,

and the Lighting Committee recommended that three extra lamps be erected in Norwich quay and three in London street. The report and recommendation were adopted. It I E. Torreng applied for permission to erect a motor garage at Oorsair Bay. The application was referred. to the chairman of estates and Borough Engineer with power to act, the Council to provide ,the material, if available, go that the building will become the property of the Council. _ The Fire Prevention Committee reported that a deputation from the Lyttelton Fire Brigade, consisting of Superintendent W; C. Carson, Lieut. R. Fenton, Bnd_' Foreman B. Carson, waited upon the committee in regard to Brigade matters. The deputation asked for assistance for insurance, payment of account for £1 Is, and consideration of alarmboxes. The committee recommended that the Fire Brigade's grant bo increased by *lO a year, this amount to be for extra insurance against accident on a scheme as suggested by the' deputation, and that the account for £1 Is be returned. The report was adopted. Or. Toy expressed appreciation of the improvements carried out at Corsair Bay, but said the chief need, that of further dressing accommodation, was still not .provided for. He moved that the Borough . Engineer be asked to prepare an estimate of the cost or increasing the number of dressing sheds. The motion was seconded by Cr. Miller, and carried.
