PERFECT WINTER.

N.Z. BOWLERS IN FIJI. Mr J. L. Morgan, of Christehurch, returned to the City yesterday after a trip to Fiji, where he participated, with a party of bowlers, in a tournament. Mr Morgan is a member of the Jidgeware Club, and made the trip prin» cipally for the purpose of avoiding the New Zealand winter. He found the winter climate in Fiji perfect. With three others he made up a team for the open championship, and a team of two rinks also waß made up for the pennant competition, the contest being with Fiji, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. < Mr Morgan states that the greens in Fiji are not perfect. They were sown down last January and very heavy rains spoiled the work, making them difficult for play, which introduced, to some extent, the element of luck. However, they improved considerably towards the end of the tournament, but by then the visitors had lost their chances. Pickett, of Levuka, played a fine game, winning the singles, J. Caughley, of Suva, ex-Director of Education in New Zealand, also proved himself a good player, and these two skipped the two rinks from Fiji, winning the pennant competition. With Nash, of Auckland, Mr Morgan reached the semi-final in the singles and the pairs, but South Australia won the pairs, Moore and Lewis being the players. "Finances in Fiji seem to be m a fair way," said Mr Morgan to a representative of The Phess last evening. "The exports double the imports, the mainstay being sugar, with bananas and copra next." He left with a very favourable impression of the generosity and the hospitality of the people of the tropic isles. During a most enjoyable month in Suva the visiting bowlers were entertained at a dinner and a ball in the Suva Town Hall, and they gave a return ball, the Governor taking a keen interest in the visit.
