TARANAKI BEAT HAWKE'S BAY. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEOBASt.). HAWERA, August 11. Br 5 points to 3 Taranaki representatives defeated Hawke's Bay before an attenannce of 6000. It was a poor display of Rugby. Hawko's .Bay should have won having a territorial advantage throughout, but they were unable to finish off their movements. There was only the conversion or a try between the scores. The scrummaging was the worst seen this season. <Jn only one occasion did a scrum pack properly. Usually Bay got the ball, but could not make much use of it. the P as '^lP e movements always breaking down. ' jlne Taranaki tackling was deplorable, and that of Bay little better. ... The first half was dull, and ended without score. Early in the second spell, from scrambling play in the Taranaki twenty-five, a Bay player took the ball, apparently offside, and passed to Dennis, who dashed over near the corner. Yates's kick failed. Thenthe first real football of the match commenced, to be continued at a fast pace to the end. Taranaki made a lightning attack, and almost scored, the la6t man to handle being pushed out near the corner. Bay woke up too, and put even. more sting into their work than did the home _ team. Tt became a desperate sti-ugfle. in which no quarter was given. W, Hohoia scored a spectacular try for Taranaki.' He secured an overrun pass at half-way. tore himself free from Huxtablo's tackle, and racod down the side line, evading several Bay men. to score a try that brought the crowd to their feet. WANGANUI BEAT MARLBOROUGH. (PBBBS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WANGANUI, August 11. The Wanganui Rugby representatives defeated the Marlborough touring team here •to-day by 19 poiglts to 18. The home team were changed a good deal from that which .defeated Manawhetiua on Saturday last owin'g to some players being unavailable. Despite the alterations, Wanganui played well, especially in the first spell. The backs were superior to the visitors'. The Marlborough forwards were better on the day, but failed at hooking. Their footwork was good, but in the loose Wanganui were the better side. In the second spell Wanganui were a trifle lifeless, and when Marlborough played up, and the scores became Wanganui 14. Marlborough 13, the side woke up and scored another try, which was converted. For the winners, tries were scored by McLean (2), Stewart, Shanley, and Tilley. Tilley converted one and Yangioni another. Washington kicked a penalty for the visitors, Gill was awarded a penalty try for obstruction, Botham scored, and Hodson converted both tries.

WAIPUKURAtr, August 11. t In the presence of a record Central Hawke s Bay crowd, Wansanui Technical College' defeated Te Ante College by 11 points to 6. The game was fast and evenly contested. Thacbabau kicked a penalty goal for Wangaoui in the first spell and fieminell two penalties for Te Ante, while Welsh and Tharkabau scored tries in the second half for Wanganul, the latter converting his own try.
IN OTHER CENTRES. (PE3SB ASSOCIATION TSLEGBAMS.) WELLINGTON. August 11. In 'the championship eeriee, 'Varsity beat Poneke by 10 points to 12, after a bard game, with plenty of incident, in the presence of about ia.OOO spectators, thereby winning the senior championship. The Southland Rugby Union's senior competition was concluded on Saturday. when the two leading teams, Star and Pirates, fought out an exciting contest, which resulted in each aide scoring 13 points. Star are premiers, with 20 points, Pirates being next with 18.
