SUMNER.
TO THE EDITOB OF THE PRESS. Sir, —Can anyone tell me how many societies or associations there are in Sumner. I've heard it said that there is one to every hundred of its population. Am I correct? I have perused the local Business Men's Annual and Who's Who, and must say I gathered E"e a lot of useful information, but don't answer my question. A ) information is gleaned about the Burgesses' Association, but only a little. I now know who its chairman is, but am quite ignorant of its aims and objects. The streets are not nearly so busy as they used to be. 1 am told that the local residents are only allowed out at stated times, that they must get permission from one or other of the societies to do shopping, and must trade as instructed. Also that the business men are not allowed to discuss matters of local interest, but have to walk warily else they will lose the small pickings of trade so graciously left to them by the progressive residents. —Yours, etc., SANS PEUR.
