MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

GREYMOUTH, July 30,

Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., presided at to-day's sitting of the Greymouth Magistrate's Court. The police were represented by Senior-Sergeant C. E. i Roach. I Peter McDonald (28), a stranger to j Greymouth, was charged with breakin" and entering the premises of George Henry Preston in Tainui street, Greymouth, during Saturday night, and stealing a crate of mutton birds, valued at £2 10s. Upon the application *of the police accused was remanded in custody until August 6th. Charged with selling liquor after hours on July 6th, William Ryan, licensee of the Union Hotel, Walseud (Mr J. "\V. Ha mi an), entered a plea of «uiltv. A fine was imposed of £5 and costs'. .Failure to return his uniform to the Defence Department cost Clifford Smith £2 18s 8(1,' the value of the missing articles, with 10s costs. Thomas McCallum, charged with being in possession of an unregistered wireless set, was ordered to pay coats. Charged with driving a motor delivery van at an excessive speed at Blackball, John E. S. Hartshorne was fined £5 and costs. An information against Joseph McLenu (Mr W. J. Joyce) of driving a motor-car in Boundary street, the num-ber-plate of which was obscured by the rear bumper bar, was dismissed. Negligent driving was alleged by the police against George Edward Black, whose motor-car collided with one of a rake of trucks at the Harbour Board's quarry crossing, Cobden, on June 26th. After' hearing the evidence, his Worship reserved his decision. Frank Ma Hoy, a motor-cyclist (Mr J. W. Hannan), pleaded not guilty to charges of driving at an excessive speed, dangerous driving, and failure to report an accident. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate held that Malloy was to blamo for the accident. A fine of £1 and costs was imposed on the excessive speed charge. The charge of failing to report the accident was dismissed, as a report was required only when a person was injured. The damage to Cameron's cycle might be arranged between the parties. The Senior-Sergeant withdrew the charge of dangerous driving. Defendant was allowed a fortnight in which to make payment Charges against Frederick William Russ and Leslie Wilton Russ of taking opossums at Marsden, on or about July 3rd, were dismissed, licenses having been icsued to them in error by the Hokitika authorities. . Buller Gorge Railway. It is understood that a considerable number of miners in and about Reefton at present unemployed are to be put to work on the Buller Gorge railway. , Golf Links Opened. The newly-formed Waitangi Teona Golf Club at Wataroa (South Westland) was formally opened, on Saturday afternoon, under most favourable circumstances. About, a dozen members 'from the Hokitika Club journeyed south to participate in the opening match. On the Friday evening a golf ball was held in the public hall at Wataroa, the visiting members of the Hokitika Club being the guests of the evening. The weather for the opening match was perfect. The players and spectators were addressed previous to tho match by Mr F. Dennehy,. a member of the committee, who explained the difficulties which had to bo surmounted before a golf club at Wataroa was possible. He stated that the principal credit was due to their president (Mr Pureell) and to Mr Northcroft, on whose land the course was laid off. The president then formally opened the links and drove a magnificent brassie shot from the tee. After the match the players and onlookers were the guosts of the president at afternoon tea. The best card in the match was returned by F. Dennehy and Miss' Gillooly. Mr C. Neville, in returning thanks for the, hospitality extended to the members of ■ the- Hokitika Club, comlimcnted the members of the WaitangiTeona Club, on the progress which they had made, and expressed a wish that in the very near future a return match would be played on the Hokitika links. The links just opened a,t Wataroa have great possibilities. At present the course consists of only seven holes, but a nine-hole course could be obtained with very little difficulty. ■ Personal. Miss McCready, until recently instructress in cookery at the Westport Technical High School, has left for Wellington, en route to Sydney; Mesdames Smythe and Jenkinson were entertained last week by tho committee of the .Westport branch of the Piunket Society, and presented with a lobster tray each. Mr and Mrs Jenkinson and family leave Westport for the north tomorrow.
