THE MUSEUM.

MAMMAL SECTION NEEDS REPAIR

The mammal section at the Canterbury Museum is old, incomplete, and out-of-date, and it is estimated that the sum of £IOOO is required to bring it to its required standard.

This is the substance of a clause iu the Museum and Library Committee s report presented to yesterday s meeting of the Canterbury College Board of A further memorandum showed that it was this department of the Museum which was in most need of attention at present. Some of the specimens were sixty years old, and all_ were over forty having been on exhibition contmmously since the opening of ( the Museum. Additions should be made in order that the collection might be rendered even moderately representative, of types to be found in a Museum comparable with that of Canterbury Museum. ... To carry'this out a sum of at least £IOOO ought to be expended, and a member of the staff should proceed to Europe to purchase what was suitable for the Museum. - Some years ago the Board established a ''collections sinking fund," to meet such exjwnditure, and the fund now stood at a little over £6OO. With the interest accrued; it would have been* possible to purchase, in about three years' time, but to accelerate matters the Board had decided to vote the recent donation of' from the City Council to this object, as they considered it desirable that the sum should be applied to som ® tangible and definite purpose,_ apd not merged in the general maintenance account of the Museum. _ The clause was adopted, and the City Council was thanked for its contribution.
