ART GALLERY.

CONDITIONS OP COMPETITION. Architects on the register of the Royal Institute of British Architects or of any affiliated institute are being invited by the City Council to take part in a competition for the preparation of plans for the Municipal Art Gallery, which, according to the present scheme, is to be erected in the Botanic Gardens.

The conditions of the competition are contained in a well-produced schedule, containing numerous photographs and a large plan of the site. The competition will be in two parts: first a pre- | liminary competition, from which three designs will be selected by the assessor, Mr S. Hurst Seager, the authors to receive £IOO each, payable on the submission of the plans, etc., required in the final competition. The Jury of Award will consist of the donor, Mr R. B. McDougall, the Mayor, Mr J. K. Archer, the Director of the Canterbury College School of Art, Mr R. Watlwork, and the assessor. The plans must include provision for a basement, containing storage space, unpacking room, furnace room, and ■ lavatories; a directors' room near the front entrance; a minimum of about 800 running feet of picture space; and a fairly spacious hall for sculpture. The site is described as being very uneven and of light, sandy soiL with shingle subsoil. It'is considered [arable to retain the trees on the site between the Gallery and the Museum. • Competitors, the conditions state, will probably take the oDportunity of arranging the rooms at different levels, not only to'gain height in the larger rooms, but in order to create a variety and picturesqueness. The total space needed for the present collection of the Society of Arts j and the Jamieson collection is 702 feet horizontal measure or-2023 square fee*, j
