TIMARU. THE WEATHER. Dolightful weather .conditions prevailed in Timaru during the week-end, sharp frosts, both on Saturday and yesterday, being followed by bright and warm days. The Wairarapa-South Can- , terbury Rugby match was jilaycd under J ideal conditions, an attendance of over ! 4000 spectators witnessing the match at I Fraser Park. Yesterday hundreds were ! attracted to Caroline Bay during the afternoon. On Saturday five degrees and yesterday six and a half degrees of frost were recorded at the Timaru Gardens. Drama League. The second annual dramatic competition, which was conducted by the. South Canterbury Drama League on Thursday and Friday last, was concluded on Saturday evening, when there was a crowded attendance at the Caroline Bay Hall. The following competed, the subjects ranging from humorous plays to serious drama: —Mrs E. J. Mirams and Messrs H. C. Hobbs and F. Barkas were the Judicial Committee. The members of the Timaru Girls' High School team, who gave a very line interpretation of "The Shadow Scene," adapted from .T. M. Barrio's "Peter and Wendy," were adjudged the winners. In announcing the- result, Mr Barkas said that a great point was to get the play over the footlights. Some of the best of the plays presented had had dull spots, and ono or two had suffered from inaudibility. Another point was not to let the play drag, but to keep it in continuous action. An important factor in connexion with the presentation of plays was to select a piece within the capabilities of the members of tho team. In presenting the shield to tho winners, the Mayor (Mr G. J. Wallace) said that the success of the Girls' High School team was all the more meritorious through the fact that it had competed against seniors. Ho would liko to congratulate the Drama League on tho useful work it was doing, which was proved by the large attendances during the festival. Dr. W. H. Unwin, the president, was also to be congratulated on forming the League, which was dahig a great work in promoting a love for dramatic study. Mayor of Chrlstcuurch. During tho week-end tho Mayor of Christchurch, Mr J. K. Archer, visited Timaru in order to conduct the spoeial services in connexion with the twelfth anniversary of tho local Baptist Church. GERALDINE. Colonel K. Mackenzie is at present on a visit to Wellington. Miss O. Bell is spending a holiday in tho North Island. Early on Saturday morning a motorcycle ridden by A. Sharpe, a mechanic in tho employ of JB. Undrill, garage proprietor, Geraldine, collided with a car owned by the Timaru Herald Company, driven by A. Butcher.' Sharpe waa thrown to the < ground, and sustained a compound fracture of the right leg. Assistance was soon at hand and the injured man was conveyed to Braeside Hospital, where ho was later attended by Dt. Unwin, of ; Timaru. The driver of the car was uninjured, but both the ear and the motor-cycle were badly damaged. _ Next Wednesday afternoon, the ladies of the Presbyterian Church intend holding a gift afternoon in the Presbyterian.Hall. The object of the afternoon is to obtain materials and funds in preparation for a sale of work to be held later. . It is understood that new premises for the Union Bant will shortly be erected in Geraldine. The. site will bo in the centre of the town, nest to the Geraldine Hotel. A team of ten men from the Geraldine Golf Club visited Pleasant Point to play the local club for the Bristol Cup. The games were of a most even nature, and the final result was in doubt until the last foursome came in. After the completion of the match, which resulted in a win for Gteraldine, Mr A. Roberts (president of the Pleasant Point Club) presented the cup to the captain of the winning team. The following were the scores, Geraldine names being mentioned first!-—Singles: L. Grieve v. O. Kerr v. W. Batchelor, 1-0; A. Burrows v. R. Roberts, 0-1; A. Sharpe v. P. Roberts, 1-0. Foursomes: Grieve and Kerr v. Evans and Roberts, 0-1; Macdonald and Paterson v. Agnew and Roberts, H 5 Feilden and McLeod vWilson -and Cox, 0-1; Withers and Kerr v. Jones and Batchelor, 1-0: Burrows and Sharpe v. Roberts and Roberts, 1-0. Totals: 8-7. The High Sohool football and basketball teams visited Pleasant Point on Thursday afternoon to play return matches against Pleasant Point High School. At the opening of the basketball game, the home team held the advantage, but were finally defeated by 14 goals to sis. The football match was fairly evenly contested. Callanan scored the first try for Geraldine, and Gilmour easily converted. Pleasant Point retaliated with a very fine penalty goal, kicked by Bishop. Good handling and a strong passing rush carried Geraldine over the line, Dunn scoring. The try was not converted. , A dashing sprint from tho twenty-five lino enabled McShane to score a try, wluch he converted himself. From a scrum close to the Pleasant Point line, Vincnt scored a try close to the corner flag, but it was not converted. Bishon kicked a second penalty goal for Pleasant Point. The game ended 16-6 in favour of the visitors. ORARI. On Thursday evening the Orari Ball was beautifully decorated with streamers of various colours and greenery, the occasion being the annual ball given by 1 the .spinsters and bachelors of the district. The popularity of the function was shown by the large crowd that attended, there being one of the biggest gatherings ever present at a dance in Orari. Credit for the success of the arrangements is due to the energetic, committee, with Miss N. Wood and Mr D. Mos3 as joint secretaries. Music was supplied by Mrs Hansell's Orchestra.

Excellent weather attended the first hare drive arranged this season by the .Orari School Committee. A .party of 25 guns went over a property adjoining the Orari river-bed and secured a bap of 99 hares. Mr W Smith, of Orari, went south on Thursday to attend the funeral of his mother, Mrs W. Smith, of Heriot, who had only recently celebrated the sixty-fifth anniversary of her wedding.
