A FRESH CLUE.
UNKNOWN SOLDIER'S MEDAL. (PEESB ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) TATTMARTJNUI, June 22. As a result of an investigation made by the "Taumarunui Press," another clue has been discovered which may identfiy the New Zealand soldier whose remains and a gold medal were found near Piers, on the Somme battlefield. Miss Marjorie Taylor, a member of the "Press" staff, was asked whether by any chance it at one time belonged to her. Miss Taylor knew nothing of the medal personally, but recollected that a married sister, now residing in Hamilton, Mrs N. H. Moore, whose maiden name was Muriel Taylor, won a medal for swimming at a tournament held by the Blenheim Swimming Club before the outbreak of the war. . She gave the medal as a keepsake to a soldier friend of the family when he was departing for the front. Later he was killed on the Somme. Mrs Moore was communicated with, and now writes to the editor of the "Press" expressing the opinion that the medal may be hers. She. says: "It looks like the one I won, but after the long lapse of time I can only swear to it by finding out the exact size of the original or by examining it. I remember that as it was a small medal, and there was no room for my full name, I requested the officials to put 'M. Taylor' on it." The soldier to whom the medal was given by Mrs Moore was Lance-Corpor-al Ferguson, No. 12-3317, of the Bth Keinforcements. Mrs Moore has never been informed whether Ferguson's body was buried in the military cemetery or not. She is certain the initials "B S.C." on one side of the medal represent "Blenheim Swimming Club.
