SHIPPING NOTES. In addition to the two ferry steamers, .the Breeze was the only departure from Lyttelton yesterday. The Waipiata is timed to sail to-day for Wellington and Auckland. The Karetu is expected to sail to-morrow for Timaru, Bluff, and Sydney. The Waitomo arrived in the stream on Wednesday night from Newcastle, and berthed vesterday morning. She is discharging coal, and is to sail to-morrow for Port Chalmers. The Opihi will not call at Lyttelton en route from Dunedin and Timaru to Westport. The Calm is due to-day from the south, and should get away this evening for Wellington, Picton, and Wanganui. The Holmdale is now to load at Lyttelton on Monday for Wellington and Wanganui. The Margaret W. should be here early next week to load for Port Waikato. The Gale is to load to-morrow, and the Breeie on Monday, for Dunedin and Timaru. The Gambia River should complete discharge of her cargo of phosphates on Tuesday, and will then dock here for cleaning and painting. Later she will proceed to Westport for bunkers. The John shonld be here to-morrow to take in cargo for Wellington, Wanganui, and New Plvmoutb. The Orepuki should arrive to-morrow or on Sunday from Tarakohe with cement. On completing discharge she will load for Nelson, Westport, and Greymouth. The Kanna is to load here on Wednesday for Napier and Gisbornp, sailing via Wel'"ThtT Kahika is now expected on Sunday from Gisborne. Xapier,_ and Wellington, and is to sail on Monday for Wellington. The Kaimanawa, due on Tuesday front Portland and Wellington, will disclarge cement and then sail for Westport. The Manuka is to sail to-day for Dunedin to complete discharge of her Melbourne cargo prior to laying up for overhaul at Port Chalmers. . The Federal Company received a message on Tuesday from the Northumberland, en ronte from" Liverpool, stating that the vessel will arrive at Aucklnnd this morning. The New Zealand Shilling Company have received advice that the Tekoa arrived at Suva on Menday afternoon from London. The Trevorian has been fixed to sail from New York on July 15th for New Zealand ports. She will be followetl by the City of Batavia, which is to leave New York on July 30th. To load general cargo for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin, the Commonwealth and Dominion Lino steamer Port Bowen arrived at New York from England on Friday last. She is to leavo to-morrow, and is due at Auckland about July 23rd. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company report that the Matakana left Napier on Wednesday for Wellington, where she arrived yesterday to complete loading. The vessel is now timed to sail finally from Wellington at daybreak to-morrow for London, Avonmouth, Glasgow, and Liverpool, via Montevideo and Teneriffo.

The Rotomahana's ship's cat nearly lost its life when the old steamer was Sunk outside the Sydney Heads. Being a cat, however, and blessed with the traditional nine lives, it was saved from an untimely end by the party sent to fire the explosive charges placed in the bottom of the ship's hold. The sad news comes from Norway that the Auldgirth; one of Russell and Company's famous barques, is to be broken _ up at Stavanfer (states "Syren and Shipping"). She. was launched in 1893 for Mr Thomas 0. Guthrie, of Glasgow, whose Village Line consisted in the middle nineties of 11 sailing Bhips, of which the largest was the Ecclefechan, built, in common with several other of Mr Guthrie's ships, by Robert s>uncan and Company, who also turned out some fine iron clippers for Patrick Honderson's Albion Line, which later became merged with Shaw, Savill, and Company. The Auldgirth was, like so manj other British sailers, eventually sold to Scandinavia, and up to recently she was employed in carrying coal and other materials from Norway to a whaling station at Cap Lopez, French Congo, returning in the fall of the year with whale oil and guano. ' The Willaston was dispatched from Auckland on Wednesday afteinon for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Wanganai. She then will , bunker at Westport, and complete the discharge of her cargo at Port Lincoln before proceeding to Port Pirie to load for The' Collector of Customs at Christchurch has been advised by Captain Bollons that the Government steamer Tutanekai will ship cargo at Lyttelton to-day.
