ARBITRATION TREATY.

AGREEMENT WITH U.S. TO LAPSE (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH —COPYRIGHT.) > (Received May 16th, 7.15 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 15. Mr Kellogg has rejected a proposal of Sir Esme Howard that, in view of the prospective inability of the Baldwin Government to complete its consultations with the Dominions on the negotiations for new arbitration with the United States, before the expiration of the present treaty on June 4th, the latter be extended temporarily.^ Through an exchange of Notes, bir Esme Howard was informed that the extension would only be made through a new treaty requiring Senate approval, and since the delay in negotiating the latter was not expected to be for iong,' it was decided that the present pact should be permitted to lapse. This course, it was felt, would make no practical difference between the two Governments.—Australian Press Association.
