STREET NAMES.
* SIMILARITY CAUSES CONFUSION Reporting to the City Council last evening, the By-laws Committee restated: The Riccarton Borough Council has written drawing attention to the confusion which exists by the fact that Hagley street, Riccarton, and Hagley avenue, Christchurch, are approximately the same name,_ and asking the Council to re-name Hagley avenue. The Oonunitte© has into the matter and finds that a petition was received on February 23rd, 1922, from the residents of that portion of Lincoln road lying between £ie Christchurch Hospital and Moorhouse avenue, asking that the name b© changed to Hagley avenue. The reasons given in the petition were: (1) That the greater portion of Lincoln road lies south of Moorhouse avenue; (a) the houses are numbered from the southern end and residents near the Christchurch Hospital have such numbers as 542 ; (3) letters addressed to residents in Lincoln road frequently go to Addington and reach the correct address a day later ; (4) the car with the Lincoln road sign does not pass along the northern side of the road, and visitors have often experienced difficulty in reaching their destination. The Committee has furnished the Riccarton Borough Council with these particulars, and has asked it if it can see its way to re-name Hagley street. A petition from 36 residents in the locality was presented protesting against the proposal to alter the name of Hagley avenue. The report was adopted.
