SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mrs J. H. luglis (Wai-iti road) has returned from Dunedin. Mrs A. Hope (Wai-iti road) has returned from a visit to Christchurch. Miss Turnbull (Wai-iti road) is visiting Christchurch. Mrs C. S. Bruce (Douglas street) has returned from Oamaru. Mrs B. Wigley (Highfield) is visiting Christchurch. Mr .and Mrs F. Newton (Maltby avenue) have returned from Tekapo. Mr J. Moody and Miss J. Moody (Te Weka street) have returned from the south. Mr and Mrs D. Byers (Selwyn street) have returned from Christchurch. Major and Mrs Hooper (Grasmere street) have returned from a visit to the Franz Josef glacier. Mrs H. Tripp (Wai-iti road) is visiting her son, Mr C. Tripp (Gore). Mrs English (Jackson street) has returned from the North Island. Mi- and Mrs 0. H. Porritt (Sealey street) are visiting Akaroa. Miss J. Lee (Christchurch) is the guest of Mrs W. H. Helmore (Wai-iti road). Mrs N. Wright (Lower Hutt) and Miss M. Hands (Palmerston North) are . the guests of their sister, Mrs R. Jordan (Wai-iti road). Mrs S. H. Brooks has returned to Timaru after a visit to Mrs W. J. Mea- • zies (Christchurch). Mrs J. Ford, who has been visiting Timaru, returned to Foxdown on Saturday- . Mr and Mrs B. Ireland (Invercargill), who have" been staying at the Grosvenor Hotel, left for Mount Cook on Saturday.

Mrs Shiel, Mrs E. Duthie, and Miss M; Martin, who have been guests at the Dominion Hotel, returned to Dunedin on Saturday. Kecent arrivals at the Grosvenor Hotel include: Mr and Mrß J. A. Mathewson' (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs H. Whiteman and child (Queenstown), Messrs E. Bell (Christchurch), E. C. B. Midlano (Sydney), A., M. Anderson (Wellington), F. Voight (Dunedin), N. L. Eiee (Sydney), and S. Smith (Queenstown). Those who have registered at the Dominion Hotel include: Mr and Mrs L. M'anderson (Auckland), Mr and Mrs E. Sinclair (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs Stout (Invercargill), Misses E. Acland Allen (London), S. Acland Allen (London), Stout (Invercargill), Messrs F. W. Buckley (Burke's Pass), L. Hopkins (Auckland), F. G. Y.M.C.A. APPEAL.

CAMPAIGN STARTS TO-DAY. Every two years the directors of the Y:M.C.A. appeal to citizens for contributions 'in order to maintain the work. In the past citizens have responded generously, and it is to be hoped that the same response will be forthcoming in the. campaign that starts to-day. Every year the Association adds to its community activity; its military :work, its.work among boys and-its work-in physical education, • all contributing in a very marked manner to the. welfare of.the community.. A number of citizens are .calling on prospective subscribers, and it is hoped that they will meet with a generous response. ' GATHERING AT SHIRLEY.

With enthusiasm stimulated rather than diminished by many days' of play, crowds of golfers gathered at the Shirley links on Saturday afternoon to take part in the Islington Gup contest, •which was won.last year by Mrs Vernon and Mr C. H. Hewlett. All the players and a goodly number of visitors were entertained at tea j by Mr George Weston, captain of the Christchurch Golf Club, and Mrs Weston, whose generous hospitality was greatly appreciated. .The prizes won.' during the men's tournament at Easter were presented by Mrs Norton Francis, wife of the president of the club, and those won during the ladies' tournament, which had just concluded, were presented by Mrs Boyle, president of the Christchurch Ladies' Golf Club. On behalf of the Ladies' Club, Mrs Boyle presented Mr H. L. Bowker with a case of pipes, as a token of appreciation of the help given by him in the Easter tournament, this year, and on many previous occasions. Cheers for Mrs Boyle, Mrs Francis, and Mr Bowker concluded a very pleasant gathering. Mrs Alister McKillop and Mr Noel Smith proved the winners of the Islington Cup. , Amongst those present besides the players were:.
