Newton (Maltby avenue) have returned from Tekapo. Mr J. Moody and Miss J. Moody (Te Weka street) have returned from the south. Mr and Mrs D. Byers (Selwyn street) have returned from Christchurch. Major and Mrs Hooper (Grasmere street) have returned from a visit to the Franz Josef glacier. Mrs H. Tripp (Wai-iti road) is visiting her son, Mr C. Tripp (Gore). Y.M.C.A. APPEAL.

CAMPAIGN STARTS TO-DAY. Every two years the directors of the Y:M.C.A. appeal to citizens for contributions 'in order to maintain the work. In the past citizens have responded generously, and it is to be hoped that the same response will be forthcoming in the. campaign that starts to-day. Every year the Association adds to its community activity; its military :work, its.work among boys and-its work-in physical education, • all contributing in a very marked manner to the. welfare of.the community.. A number of citizens are .calling on prospective subscribers, and it is hoped that they will meet with a generous response. ' GATHERING AT SHIRLEY.

With enthusiasm stimulated rather than diminished by many days' of play, crowds of golfers gathered at the Shirley links on Saturday afternoon to take part in the Islington Gup contest, •which was won.last year by Mrs Vernon and Mr C. H. Hewlett. All the players and a goodly number of visitors were entertained at tea j by Mr George Weston, captain of the Christchurch Golf Club, and Mrs Weston, whose generous hospitality was greatly appreciated. .The prizes won.' during the men's tournament at Easter were presented by Mrs Norton Francis, wife of the president of the club, and those won during the ladies' tournament, which had just concluded, were presented by Mrs Boyle, president of the Christchurch Ladies' Golf Club. On behalf of the Ladies' Club, Mrs Boyle presented Mr H. L. Bowker with a case of pipes, as a token of appreciation of the help given by him in the Easter tournament, this year, and on many previous occasions. Cheers for Mrs Boyle, Mrs Francis, and Mr Bowker concluded a very pleasant gathering. Mrs Alister McKillop and Mr Noel Smith proved the winners of the Islington Cup. , Amongst those present besides the players were:.
