OBITUARY.

MR D. M. M'INTYRE,

■Mr David Martin Mclntyre, one of the early pioneers, died in Christchurch on Thursday aged 93 years. H« arrived, in Melbourne in 1860 by the ship Detroit, and was in Ballarat and Ben digo in the wild days of the ,famous gold He went to Dimedin in 1861, and'from there participated in the Gabriel's Gully rush. . After living in Dunedin for some years, he joined in still another; gold rush—that to the Thames field. . He then became a member of the Stock Exchange for; 11 years, and was .managing director of several companies ;■ he also managed the Wahu and Black Angel Gold Mines. His partner for thr.ee years as a stock and-share broker was Baron Ja'tues de Hirsch, of Austria. He mane a trip to England and Scotland in 1879. and later joined the late 'Mr C. W\ Jackson as a runholder in the Wyndham Valley, Southland, and resided there for 13 years. Mr Mclntyre was a highly cultured man, gifted with a spirit of public service, and he served for many years as chairman of school committees and local bodies in Otago and Southland. Mr J. T). Martin Mclntyre, of Wellington, is a son of deceased.

MAJOR HARDHAM, V.C

[THE PRESS Special Service] WELLINGTON, April 14. Friends and all others with whom Major William James Hardlham, V.C, of Wellington, came in contact, - will regret to learn of his death, last night at his residence, Perth street, Ngaio, after an illness of over five months. A man with a fine record, Major Hard- ' ham had a quiet and retiring disposition, and all comrades of his felt that if there .was any man worthy of wear-' iiig a-V.C. it was "Billy" Hardham. The deceased was the only Now Zea- , lander to gain a_'.'Victoria Cross in 'the Boer War. Tljc" late Major Hardlham, in- the campaign in Africa, was also awarded a Queen's Medal, and fiv,c clasps. Major Hardham also took part in the Great War, leaving New Zealand with the Main Body, W.M.R. He had two periods of service—August 13th, 1914, tor' Juno 30th, 1917, and from November . 13th, 1917, to October 15th, 1919. He Was wounded on Gallipoli in May, 1915, and in December of that year he was irivalidled back to New Zealand. Before reaching Hbbart, however, his wound became septic, and an operation was performed on board ship. He was landed at Hobart. Another operation was performed there, and ho, arrived back in the Dominion in February, 1916. Whilst "convalescing he was asked to.l accept; the position of' Commandant,; of the Queen Mary Military Hospital," Hanmer, and he remained there until he was again passed! as tit for active service. He entered camp again in December, 1917, and left New Zealand, with the 30th lteinforcements (Mtd.Vin February, 1918. His old '■ wiJnnd gave trouble again, however, aticl during Iris service in Palestine he frequently had to report sick. In December, 1918, he was invalided- back, to NW Zealand. The late Major Hardham servedl at the Dardanelles, in E£ypt, and, in England.
