SMOKE CONCERT.

OARSMEN FORGATHER. Oarsmen from . all of the Christchurch clubs were present at the annual smoke concert of the Avon Bowing Club, held in the club's pavilion on Saturday night. The gathering. was a. singularly successful one from every point of view. Toasts there were in plenty, and between toasts there were musical items, recitations, and stories, - while a conjurer who performed miracles' with thimbles—making five thimbles grow where only two grew before—and with cards, paper, and%other things, held' the attention of everyone present for. ten minutes' or so. Mr C. James (president of the club) occupied the. chair, and among those pre- . Bent were: Mr F. D: Kesteven (president of the Canterbury Kowing Association), D. S. Boyd (Canterbury Club), W. Duggan (Union), and H. Tapley (captain of the Avon Club). . „ mL Mr James proposed the toast of 'The Avon Club," und in doing eo congratulated tho club on ; .ts success in winning the D.C.L. cup for most points in regattas, and the champion pairs of New Zealand, an honour that was collected for the club by the Stiles brothers. \ The club captain, Mr H. Tapley, replied on behalf of his cluhmates, and congratulated tho younger olubs on starting this season. He also extended hh congratulations to the StiWs brothers for their .singular success. They had, he said,, given Canterbury province a good lift up _ so_ far as lowing was concerned, and their feat was an object lesson to the younger members of this and other clubs in the province. "Sister Clubs'' was proposed by Mr A. Evans, who congratulated the Canterbury Club—the senior four especially—on its success. He was pleased also to see that the Sumner Club had "come to light this y( The toast -was responded to by.MrJX S. Boyd (Canterbury), Mr W. Duggan (Union), Mr C. Hart (Sumner).
