WAR IN CHINA.
HEAVY FIGHTING REPORTED. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION—BT ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT.) SHANGHAI, April 12. Unconfirmed reports state that the Nationalist forces are falling back on Nanking before the Northern onslaught. Following anti-Nationalist successes in Northern Kiangsu province the Nanking Government's troops are recrossing the Yangtze southwards, seeking shelter in the walled city of Nanking. Sounds of gunfire are reported to be audible from Pukow, on the Yangtze terminus of the Pukow-Tientsin railway. 1 < Reports of heavy fighting between Marshall Chang Tso-Lin's (Northern) and General Chiang Kai-shek's (Nationalist) armies in the vicinity of Hsu-chow-fu, following the launching of ail offensive by the Northerners, apparently are confirmed, though the permanency of the Northern victory is questionable.—Australian Press Association.
