Glowing reports of brighter times and prosperity in England were brought by passengers who arrived by the lonic at Auckland. One man said that he saw no signs of poverty, and he predicts that in two or three years England will be more prosperous than she ever was. "I was very much surprised to find how optimistic everyone was in England," said Mr R. Wilson, a retired farmer, who returned from his first trip Home for 25 years. "Everything is booming," he contrniied. "The farmers seem to be the only people who are not enjoying good times. Many of them have gone bankrupt, but legislation is to be passed this session to improve things." Sir Wilson previously owned a farm in the Waikato district, and later took up another farm at Tauranga. He made an extensive tour through the whole of England, and even in the Midlands and the North he saw no signs of distress. Industries were working to capacity and a great increase in trade was promised. "England's roads are wonderful," said Mr Wilson. "They are all as smooth as. a deck— even the small highways. I did not have any enquiries from people wishing to come out and settle in New Zealand," he added. "There is not the same desire to emigrate, and some of the immigrants have sent Home bad reports of conditions here."
