NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.
* . Tides. It will he high tide on the beach this morning at 10.48 o'clock and in the river at 12.3 o'clock, and to-mor-row at 11.41 a.m., and 12.54 p.m. respectively. Bowling. The Bowling Club closed its 1927-8 season on Wednesday, when an enjoyable doubles tournament marked the occasion, resulting in C. Stokes winning the skip's prize, and G. W. Bishop the lead's prize. Band Gala. The Gala organised by the Christchurch Municipal Band, postponed from Saturday and Monday last in consequence of the wet weather, is to be held this afternoon. Fire Brigade. At a meeting of the committee of the local Kre Brigade, tho following were appointed to represent the Brigade at the Canterbury Provincial Conference at Eangiora on tho 21st inst.: Brigade secretary J. Stokes, past president R. A. Stokes, and engineer W. P. Fitchett. Municipal Band. At a meeting of the members of the band held after practice on Thursday tho matter of obtaining a suitable room for practice was discussed. Mr J. Nuttall occupied the chair, and there was an attendance of over 30, Though grateful to the School Committee for the use of the schoolroom as a temporary measure, it was firm that the building was quite unsuitable for band purposes, and it was unanimously agreed that an effort should be made to obtain more suitable premises. A donation of £2 2s was wceivod from Mr W. F. M. Buckley. Methodist Church. There was a largo attendance in the local Methodist Church on Thursday evening, the occasion being the induction of the Rev. 0. S. Pearn. The Rev. B. James presided and the Rev. Harold Sharp addressed those assembled. Speeches of welcome were made by Mrs Clark, Messrs Sincock, Lawry, and. P. W. Sharpe, the last-named representing Shirley.
At the conclusion of the induction ceremony an adjournment was made to the schoolroom where the new minister and his wife were introduced, after which supper was served by the ladies' committee. Anzac Day. In commemoration of Anzac Day, it is understood the local returned men, territorials, the local senior cadet company together with its band, the Girl Guides, Boy Scouts, Municipal Band, and other local organisations, are assembling in tho morning of the 25th, and marching in procession to the cenotaph, where wreaths will be placed and the commemoration service held. The exact hour at which the several units are to parade has not yet been fixed. Personal. Miss Hetta Phelps Hopkins, of George street, is the guest of Mrs H. J. Jewell, "Okawa," Mount Somers.
