THE JUBILEE MEMORIAL.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—ln my opinion Mr It. B: Owens's scheme of the river boulevard is the best Jubilee Memorial. But even here there is one matter overlooked. Besides the beautifying, the sports, and pleasure to be obtained from such a scheme, there is a far more vital question wiiich should carry weight with thinking nieu and women, and that is the deepening and cleansing of the river. From a health point or view it is the all important subjectThe beautiful Avon is, after all, our main drainage of the City, and if the hope to combat successfully scar.et fever, scarlatina, diphtheria, etc., wo must have a cleansed river, and the importance of this question cannot be too strongly emphasised upon the Drainage Board. Such schemes as the Summit road, Town Hall, Art GGalleyiy are quite secondary, and it will hurt no one to wait for them; opportunities for these will come all in good time. I say more power to Mr Owen, and mav he go ahead: even if it does cost £25,000 or £50,000. It will be money well spent, since it will increase the health and recreation for the people. And to help along this boulevard scheme Mr Owen will receive on Monday morning a donation of -o iron an anonymous friend and suppor with the'object of encouraging others to do likewise. Let us start the worn nest month, absorb the unemplo> • and show something for the mo . i spent.—Yours, etc., r OLD COLONIAL. April 13th.
