"WILL STAND FIRM."

CITY COUNCIL AND BUTCHERS.

As the outcome of resentment felt by Christ-church butchers at the action of the City Council in licensing a butcher's stall at the Municipal Market, it was stated last week that there was a possibility of a number of Christchurch butchers ceasing to patronise the Council's abattoir and taking their stock to the freezing works. The Mayor, Mr J. K. Archer, gave a very definite outline of his opinion in this matter to a representative of The Press on Saturday. '•I have read, with very great surprise, since coining home, a statement concerning the alleged attitude of the Christchurch butchers towards the Municipal Market," said the Mayor. "I cannot possibly believe that they would do anything so stupid as to withdraw their slaughtering from the public abattoir. It may, however, be wise to state definitely, and without qualification, that if they do so it will not make the slightest difference to the attitude of the present City Council, in my opinion, towards the Municipal Market. So fa'r as I can see, the market is already an established success, and it will remain and be developed. There is only one thing to lead to its abandonment, and that is an adverse judgment of the Christchurch public generally. So far as I can discover, that judgment is, in the main, favourable. In any case the position is that at the last municipal election Christchurch placed a Labour Council in office, and while it remains it will govern the City according to Labour principles, and "not for a single second is it going to be turned aside from its course bv the threats of any interested group, whether fruiterers, or butchers, or anyone else. "If the butchers do take the action that is suggested, the Council will deal with their conduct when the occasion arises, although, of course, I am not now in a position to say what will be its line of action," added the Mayor. •'The primary aim of the Council will be to maintain a satisfactory meat supply for the City, and the citizens may 'he confident that this will be done."'
