The Hon. Mr Michel, M.L.C. (Hokitika), returned yesterday from Christchurch, where he attended the funeral of his brother, the late Mr Frank A. Michel.
Miss C. Kathbun returned yesterday from a holiday spent in Christehureh. Mrs E. Chapman, who has been visiting Mrs J. Tennent, Karoro, returned to Wellington yesterday.
Mr M. Jamieson returned yesterday from Christehureh,
Mr F. Freitas (Hokitika) returned yesterday from Wellington. The Kev. Bro. Moore, of the Christian Bros.' College, Redcastlc, Oamuru, arrived yesterday from South Westland, and leaves by to-morrow's express for Christehureh.
Mr J. Sullivan, of the Greymouth Post Office staff, left yesterday for Wellington where he will attend an executive meeting of the Post and Telegraph Officers' Association. Messrs W. B. Hutton and E. L. Kehoe, of the Grey Technical School teaching staff, returned yesterday from Timaru and Dunedin respectively. Sister Bonnington has been appointed to succeed Sister Martin at the Buller district Hospital. Sister Bonnington received her training at Nelson, and was also on the staff of the Oamaru Hospital. Mr M. J. Phillips returned yesterday from Wellington. The marriage was solemnised at the Church of England, Westport, on Thursday evening of Miss Ivy Earle, youngest daughter of Capt. W. Earle and Mrs Earle, Westport, and Mr Charlton Sara, youngest son of Mrs Sara, of Westport, and formerly of Black's Point, Keefton.
The funeral of the late Mrs Elizabeth Alice Hanuan took place at Karoro this afternoon, when there was a very large attendance of mourners. The whole of the public bodies in the district were represented and the cortege, which was over a quarter of a mile long, included over thirty motor conveyances. The services at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. Father Kilgour, assisted by the Rev. Father Holohan. Misses M. Caisley, M. Davies, and J. Robinson, of the Grey Technical School teaching staff, returned by yesterday's express from their midsummer vacation. Reefton Fire. A start has been made at the scene of the disastrous fire in Broadway, Reefton, to remove the debris preparatory to rebuilding operations. Mr F. Keating of Stevenson's Hotel has taken temporary premises on tho opposite side of Broadway in what is known as the dental surgery, preparatory to rebuilding. Dr. W. A. Conlan, of Keefton, the owner of Burke's Hotel, is making arrangements to replace the hotel with a modem building. Arrangements are also in hand for the reconstruction of Messrs J. W. Chalk and Co.'s boot emporium and Mr Duff's pharmacy. It is expected that the reconstruction operations will keep the building trade in Reefton busy for some months. Mr Robinson, fire adjuster for the Norwich Union Insurance Co., has arrived in Reefton from Wellington on business in connexion with the recent fire. Messrs Jackman (Nelson) and Cooper (Christchurch) representing the State Office and Queensland Insurance Co. respectively, have also arrived in Reefton. St. Patrick's Celebrations, At a meeting of the St. Patrick's Day Celebrations Committee, it was decided to hold an Irish National Concert at Greymouth on Thursday, March loth, and the annual Hibernian Ball on the following evening. Arrangements were put in hand for the procession and children's spo.rts, which will be held at Victoria Park on St. Patrick's Day. Accident. While assisting to demolish the old Methodist Church at Dcnniston, Mr William Cooper, aged 62 years, received serious injuries through portion of a wall falling on him. He was taken to the Westport Hospital. State Collieries Picnic. The State Collieries' annual picnic was held yesterday at Cass square, .Hokitika, in perfect weather. Tho trip was made by about 1200 excursionists. Seddon Medals. Advice has been received by Mr T. R. Saywell, District Public Trustee, that the successful candidates for the Seddon medals this year are John Cunningham Chalmers, Grey Technical School, and Lucy Colen, St. Mary's Convent, Greymouth. Express Late. Yesterday's west-bound express arrived in Greymouth about half an hour late, the cause of the, delay being a hold-up at Springfield, through a mishap to a goods train engine. The express brought over 290 passengers to the Coast. A Hot Day. Greymouth presented a deserted appearance to-day, a large exodus of picnickers leaving this morning for Punakaiki, Mitchell's, and oJher resorts. The Post and Telegraph staff's picnic at Seven Mile, and the Motor-Cycle Club's picnic at Kumara beach, were also well patronised. The weather was very hot, and the Blaketown beach was the chief attraction for stay-at-home citizens. Cricket. Star seniors played a drawn game with United B yesterday afternoon under ideal conditions. Batting first Stars compiled 174, the best scorers being Thompson 46, Mcintosh 42, Langbein 17, Reynolds 12, and Tomkies 16. Casey took four wickets for 55 runs, Revell one for 47, and Baldwin four for 33. United then went to the wickets, and at the call of time the board showed 165 for nine wickets, the best scorers being Nightingale 35, Casey 12, McIvor 20, A. Jamieson 57, and Beard 24. The Star wicket-keeper, Mcintosh, was unfortunate in being struck by a bat in full swing across the bridge of his nose, which necessitated medical attention.
In to-day's junior match being played on the Recreation ground between United and Runanga, United were all dismissed for 24 runs, O'Neill taking six wickets for 12 runs and Garvey three for 11. Runanga made 135, the best scorers being Hunter 32, Ireland 31, Smith 16, O'Neill 14, and Stevens 12. Baldwin took two wickets for 34 runs, Grooby one for 26, Rodgers three for 30, and Thompson three for 33. A secoiid innings ia in progress.
