THE NEW PRAYER BOOK.

CHURCH AND STATE. POSSIBILITY OP COMPROMISE. (BT CABLE—PRESS ABSOCXATIOK COPTMOHT.) (APSTBALIAH AND If.E. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received January 24th, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, January 24. Dr. Temple, Bishop of Manchester, in a statement in regard to tho Prayer Book, says he is unable to agree with either complete defiance of tho State in the interest of Church autonomy, or an immediate acceptance of the vote of the House of Commons. "Explanatory modifications will clear away many objections," he said, "but it would b'o a fatal mistake to accompany tho proposals by measures for coereivo discipline. The first necessity is to provide a law for public worship which really corresponds with the spiritual life of tho Church to-day, so there may bo firm ground when cheeking what is illegal. If the Bishops had made more extensive alterations H would have meant acquiescence in the right of tho Stnto to determine the Church's form of worship. ''

SUGGESTED AMENDMENTS

(AU3TBALIAH AND N.E. AHD SUN CABLB.) (Keceived January 24th, 8.5 p.m.) LONDON, January 24. The Council of the Churchmen's Union has sent a letter to tho Archbishops and Bishops urging that the following amendments be deposited in the Book before it is again presented to Parliament:— A rubrical provision that the elements, if reserved, be only reserved in a closed safe in the vestry outside the parts of the Chureh used'for worship. The insertion of a rubric indicating the lawfulness of reserving the eloments for Communion for the sick, and the unlawfulness of reservation for adoration. Tho insertion in an appropriate place in tho Prayer Book of a statoment that a non-fasting Communion does not conflict with the practice and teaching of the Church of England.
