U.S. PRESIDENCY.

THE REPUBLICAN CONVENTION.

A SPLIT THREATENED. (BT CABLB—PBTBS ASSOCIATION—COPIBIOHT ) (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLI ASSOCIATIOS.) (Received January 24th, 6.55 p. m .) WASHINGTON, January 23. Assuming the role of stormy petrel of the Republican Party held by his father for so many years, Senator La Follette will lead a delegation to the Eepublican National Convention in support of Senator Norris for the Presidency. It appears that this movement, as in 1924, threatens to split the Eepublican party. Senator La Follette will demand the inclusion in the Eepublican platform of a denunciation of American policy in Nicaragua, a denunciation of the three billion dollars naval programme, an expression of opposition to compulsory military training and service, and a demand for an amendment of the Volstead Act.

THE LIQUOR ISSUE. (BT CABLE—PIVKBS ASSOCIATION-—COPntIOHT.) (AUSTBALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) WASHINGTON, January 23. Senator Borah has begun a campaign to place all candidates for the Eepublican Presidential nomination on record regarding prohibition. Senator Borah sent to Senator Curtis a public letter asking his attitude and announced that he intends sending a similar letter to all Eepublican candidates. He asked Senator Curtis whether he favoured the prohibition plank in the Eepublican platform; what would be his attitude towards enforcement if elected; whether he would favour an executive programme to enable States. to determine the alcoholic content of liquor sold' within their borders; and also whether he would favour the repeal of the Volstead Act or the Eighteenth Amendment.
