The new infant school to be built at Rangiora is to be on the open-air principle, consent having been given the Canterbury Education Board by the Education Department. A motor-car o"n fire attracted a large crowd in High street, near Colombo street, shortly after 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. By the time one of the chemical engines from the fire station arrived the outbreak had been subdued.

A meeting of householders is to be held next Monday night to make arrangements for the opening of tho Mount Pleasant School on February Ist. Messrs O. S. Thompson (chairman of the Canterbury Education Board) and E. H. Andrews, another member, wilt (attend the meeting on behalf of the Board.

During his visit to the Chatham Islands his Lordship Bishop Brodie heard eloquent eulogies of the new hospital erected by the Canterbury Hospital Board and so capably managed by Sister Herrick and Nurse Ford. A general feeling of satisfaction exists that Dr. Drew has now at his command such efficient care and nursing for hospital patients. Very satisfactory progress is being made with the construction of the Catholic Open Air School at Sumner, and it is expected that, the building will be completed, early enough to permit of the blessing and opening cere'-' mony, which is to be'performed by his Lordship Bishop Brodie, being held before the commencement of the scholastic year. Cr. G. R. Hunter, chairman of the City Council's Works Committee, told a. reporter yesterday that the power given by last year's legislation to construct sewer connexions up to tho fence line of properties would be, in all probability, acted upon. Especially was ft necessary that this work should be done in streets -which it is proposed should be reconstructed in permanent material.

The jubilee of the Belfast School will be observed on January 27th and 28th, and a sports meeting Trill be held on the first day. An invitation to be present was received by the Canterbury Education Board yesterday and it was decided that as many members as possible attend on the second day. At' the first day's ceremony tbo MoFarlane Shield for the best school garden will bo presented. Bitumen is appreciated by the police as well as by motorists. In a case in the Wellington Magistrate's Court, Senior-Sergeant D. Scott referred to the advantage of bitumen roads from the police point of view,. ."There 's no doubt about it," he said, "bitumen is the finest thing that has ever been put on the roads for the observation of skid marks in cases of collisions and accidents. Bitumen shows the marks, and they are indisputable." A suggestion has been made that the name of the Monavale School bo altered to Ma Waro, the School Committee having expressed the opinion that confusion of mails, etc., was caused. An objection to .the proposed change by a former secretary of the committee was read at yesterday's meeting of the Canterbury Education Board. The Board decided .not: to take any action, an amendment that the_ feeling of the householders be ascertained' being a©-, feated. Ma Waro is a siding on the. Fairlie railway line. At yesterday's meeting of the Canterbury Education Board a letter was read from the Education Department requesting that the Board obtain particulars regarding the possibility of acquiring a suitable site adjacent to the Addington railway station for the purpose of establishing a proposed new manual training centre. In this connexion a reply sent to the Department respecting a site in Clarence road was also considered and it was agreed that ■ Messrs Thompson and Winsor bo deputed to inspect the area and draft a further letter to the Department, if considered necessary. A start was made yesterday by the Heathcote County Council workmen with maintenance work on that part of Dyer's Pass road between VictoriaPark and the Kiwi. Plans for the reconstruction of the road between the Takahe to the entrance of Victoria Park have been submitted for approval to the Public Works Department. It is proposed to spend £SOO in widening this part of the road to 22ft. Yesterday about twelve men started winning out metal from the roadside above Park. When the plans for the construction work have been approved .another team will be put on that job. A general meeting of.'students attending the Teachers' Summer . School at Nelson decided by an overwhelming, majority to continue as a national as against a district school, and Oamaru was chosen as the location for next year's school. The election of officers resulted:—President, Mr F. Miiner (re-elected); vice-president, Mr Spencely Walker; national executive, Miss J. Hume, Messrs G. H. Stubbs, Duncan Rae, and ■H. G. Johnston. Opportunity was taken by one of the students to express, on. behalf of the students, their appreciation of the work done by the. national executive and the local executive.' Mr Milner paid a special tribute to Mr H. J. Thornton, secretary of the: Nelson Education Board, the local organising secretary of the school, for his splendid services.— Press Association/
