U.S. SENATE FAVOURS REDUCTION.

Tlio United States Sonate wont on record as favouring a reduction of th» existing Republican tariff schedules. It adopted Sonator W. H. Monaster's resolution, stating that such, revision should be made to establish, agriculture on a basis of equality with industry. The vote was 54 to 31. Twelve MidWestern Republicans joined with tha almost solid Democratic forces to secure the adoption of the resolution, these being Senators J. J. Blaine, W. E. Borah, S. W. Brookhart, A. Capper, L. J. Frazier, R. B. Howell, R. M. La Foullette, W. H. McMaster, P. Norbeck, G. W. Norris, G. P. Nye, and W. B. Pine. Only two Democrats voted against it. A message from Washington on January 10th said: An unexpected precipitation of £he increment to secure a downward revision of tha tariff occurred in the Senate to-day, when Senator McMaster asked for action on his resolution putting the Sen. ate on record ns favouring tariff reduction during the present session. Ha intimated that relief for the farmers could not otherwise be secured. A discussion lasting tor several hours followed. Senator Walsh said that certain industries were entitled to increased rates. Senator Borah said that ho> f anronred inoreased duties on farm products. Various other Senators indicated particular industries that should bo favoured. It is not considered likely however, that the present session of Congress will take any action on th» I tariff.
