TIMARU.

MAGISTRATE'S COURT. A statutory first offender on a charge of drunkenness, who appeared in the Magistrate's Court yesterday before Mr J. F. Arnold, J.P., was convicted and discharged, defendant agreeing to take ont a prohibition order. Charged with stealing goods valued at £92 13s, the property of L. A. Thompson, Cecil Butler was Temandod to appear to-day. Tennis. The following will play for South Canterbury against North Otago on Saturday:—D. C. Johnston, W. Pearse, Crammond, Roberts, G. A. Innes-Jones, Patterson, Mrs Sheldon, Mrs W. A. Scott, Mrs Bannerman, Miss R. PeaTse, Miss I. Green, and Miss Gibson. Found Dead. William Ward, a single man, aged 68 years, engaged as a labourer, was found dead in bed in a hut at Otipua on Monday. Deceased was last seen alive on Thursday, and it is thought that death took place somo time before he was found. He had not beon in good health. The Footstool Climbed. Mr R. Twyneham, a solicitor, of Christchureh, accompanied by Guide J. Pope, succeeded in climbing the Footstool, Mount Sefton, on Monday. Considerable difficulty was experienced in making the ascent, somo dangerous crevasses being encountered. The Weather. Rain fell yesterday morning, but the weather cleared about noon, and at intervals the sun broke through the clouds. Caroline Bay was not patronised by tho usual crowds, but, nevertheless, in the afternoon many people occupied the tennis courts, and a few spent the day on the sands. Orphans' Picnic. The children of the St. Saviour's Orphanage, the Presbyterian Children's Home, and the Temuka Boys' Homo will be given an outing by the South Canterbury Automobile Association and the South Canterbury Garage Proprietors' Association on January 2oth. Cars from Timaru and Temuka will meot at Pleasant Point, and the children will then be taken to Mr A. E. Kerr's station at Cave. It is estimated that 200 children will attend. Athletic Meeting. The following events will bo run under tho auspices -of the Y.M.C.A. Amatour Athletic Club at tho Caledonian Grounds tomorrow ovpning:— 100 yards open handicap, 880 yards open handicap, and high jump open handicap. The following officials will bo in charge of the meeting:—Starter, Mr A. E. Horwell; handicapper, Mr E. D. Mcßae; judges, Messrs J. W. Waldie, C. W. Cameron, C. Hall, and V. Nicholas; stewards, Messrs E. G. Cliffen and A. D. Mcßae; timekeeper, Mr A. Fraser. ■■ General News. At a meeting of the South Canterbury, branch, of the Now Zealand Picture Showmen's Association representatives stated that the Daylight Saving Act had seriously affected the patronage at picture thoatres. South Canterbury Senior Cadet n.c.o.'s will go into camp at Burnham to-day, and cadets from the South Canterbury secondary schools of the Southern Command will attend a refresher eourso from January 25th to February Ist. Yesterday was the 69th anniversary of the' arrival in Timaru of the first immigrant ship, Strathallan.

ORARI. The Orari Domain Carnival and tug-of-war competition were concluded on Saturday eveniug. The attendance was large and interest maintained to the last event. The following are tho results:—Light-weight: Frothblowers beat Geraldine Fire Brigade, Temuka beat Geraldine Flat, Temuka Snags beat Temuka, Frothblowers beat Sodtown, Washington's beat Orari, Temuka Snags beat Frothblowers, Temuka Snags beat Washington's; final, Temuka Snags 1. Washington's 2. Heavyweight: Woodbury beat Clandeboye, Temuka Maoris beat Orari No. 2, Kakahu beat Maoris, Kakahu beat Woodbury; finai, Kakahu 1, Woodbury 2. Ladies' Competition: Hilton beat Orari, Timaru Hockey beat Geraldine, Seaforth beat Geraldine, Seaforth beat Hilton, Seaforth beat Timaru Hockey; final, Seaforth 1, Timaru Hockey 2. Challenges—Heavy-weight: Orari No. 2 beat Woodbury, Kakahu beat Woodbury, Hilton beat Teetotallers, Orari No. 2 beat Orari No. 1. Light-weight: Winchester drew , twice with Orari, Hilton beat Sodtown, Winchester beat Orari, Washington's beat Brenton Bros* The following represented Orari in the competition:No. 1 team, Heavy-weight: W. O'Neill.. The Timaru railway picnic was held at Orari on Sunday, about 600 arriving by special train. The weather was beautiful and many expressions of satisfaction were made by the visitors on the choice of the picnic grounds. Many of the picnickers found their way to the river and indulged in swimming, while others enjoyed tennis on the Orari courts. A sports programme was carried through, and the train left for the south shortly after six. Miss Inga Hempstalk (Lyttelton) is the guest of Mrs G. H. Wood, of Orari. Miss Esme Lamb (Christchureh) is staying with Mrs D. M. Lamb, Orari. Mr. P. S. Quirke arrived in Orari yesterday. The following are staying at the Orari Hotel: Mrs J. and the Misses Coffey (Kirwee), ■ Mrs McClelland (Christchureh), Miss Carrig (Christchurch), Mrs Leigh (Timaru), Miss Bishop (St. Andrews), and the Misses Kiely (Christchureh).

Dr. Vanuevar Bush, professor of electric power tranmission in the Massachusetts Institution of Technology, has invented an electric machine which solves equations and make abstruse calculations. It is claimed that the machine will do in minutes work which would occupy a human being for a year.
