SURFING TRAGEDY.
GIRL OF 14 DROWNED

Just after noon to-day bystanders at the junction of Onepu road and Lyall parade heard cries which were the prelude to a tragedy in which Stella Josephine Knight, 11 years of age, lost her life. She had been bathing in the surf in company with her brother, aged 10. They had not been in the water long when both were seen to be in difficulties. The beach caretaker, Mr McDonald, Mr D. d. McXab. of Timaru. and Mr Marchant, of the Lyall Bay Surf Club, with other members of the club, rushed to the rescue and brought the boy to the shore. Once on the beach he wa« soon none the worse for his experience. Mr McDonald and Mr McXab carried Stella Kniarht from the sea. and it was seen that she was at least unconscious. At once means of restoring respiration wore omploved, but without result. Dr. AY. Shirer. who was communicated with, hastened to _<luspot, hut was unable do anything. Tlip nVcnsed was a daughter nf Mr Knight, of Margaret road. AVadesinwn. who is a messenger in the Genera! Post Office.
