NOTES ON THE RACING.

King Cheops Surprises,

The opening event, the Trial Handicap, attracted a field of eight runners, Kenniore being made an odds-on favourite. King Cheops was the first out of the barrier, and led along the back from Rina Mangu, Kenmore, and Atone. King Cheops was first into the straight and went on to win with ease by three lengths from Kenmore, with llina Mangu two lengths away third in front of Atone, Gaslight, and Smithereens. The winner never gave the remainder of the field a chance. Kenmore made a gallant effort to overhaul him in the straight, but made no impression. Rina Mangu failed to run up to form, while Motor Smash and Smithereens were never near the leaders at any part of the race. Pavourite Prevails. Gold Bush was made a good favourite for the first trotting event, and led from end to end. He was attended throughout by Lord Bountiful, who followed him into the straight, Gold Bush winning comfortably by a length and a half. Thorpie finished well to get within half a length of the second horse, with Dome a similar distance away next.

Easy for Bed Heather. The First Hurdle Handicap was contested by five runners, Bed Heather carrying half the machine total. Flying Master made play for the first mile, and at one stage had a break of twenty lengths, but the favourite gathered him in four furlongs from home and without being asked to do his best, won by four lengths from Flying Master. Tenterfield ran a good race under his big impost, and finished a fair third. Elian and Cashbox were tailed off.

Opnir's Jubilee Cup. Contrary to Goosestep was made a better favourite than Ophir for the Jubilee Cup Handicap, while there was not much support forthcoming for either Fresco or Prince Ferouz. The last-named was tho first to take the lead from Ophir, Fresco, and Goosestep, but after two furlongs had been covered Fresco assumed command, and with Goosestep as a companion led Ophir and Prince Ferouz to the far turn. Ophir was rushed to the front on the outside of the leading pair at the fur turn, and had a two lengths advantage on the rails when the straight W3S entered from Goosestep and Fresco. Ophir finished full of running and was not troubled to win by a length and a half from the favourite, with Fresco a similar distance away third. Prince Ferouz was outclassed. The winner, who has made wonderful improvement on the trip, registered an attractive performance, and never looked life suffering defeat. Goosestep had every chance, but gave more evidence of being on the down grade, while Fresco's effort was a disappointment to his connexions.

A Good Finish. Spode and Pickanirtny were withdrawn from the Members' Handicap. Krin-go-Bragh and Arrowuiir disputing favouritism. Erin-go-Bragh and Benmure led Arrowmir and Ayrburn from the jump off, and this was the order along the back'and into the straight. Arrowmir squeezed in between the two leaders in the run homo, and the trio engaged in the best finish of the Meeting, Arrowmir getting his nose in front of Erin-go-Bragh ini the last stride, with Beuraure a short neck away third. Clontarf, Birthmark, and Ayrburn followed in that order. The winner was not well favoured in the early part of the race, and gave the leaders a big start. Commencing the run to the post his task seemed hopeless, but he finished on gamely from the distance post and recorded a meriforions win.

Second Trotting Event,

Six faced the starter in the Soldiers' Trot Handicap. Gold Rush, penalised 72yds for his earlier win, again carried the public confidence. He made up a lot of his ground entering the second circuit, but broke badly and retired from the contest. Rev Child led Lighti'oot for over a round, but Peter Wilkin passed the leaders in the back stretch and quickly opened up a gap, eventually winning pulling up by throe lengths from Rev Child, with Lightfoot four lengths awav third".

Ortflamb's Easy Victory,

Of the four starters in the Maru'.a Handicap. Oriflamb was made o much better favourite than Bronstell, and duly materialised. Orbit was iu the van for half the journey, but Oriflamb and Bronstell then passed hiin and the former let! into the straight from Bronstell. Bronstell challenged in the run home, but Oriflamb was not troubled to win by two and a halt lengths, with Steel Bar two lengths away third. The winner held the upper hand throughout, and is undoubtedly at the top of his form. Bronstell was always in difficulties pursuing Oriflamb, and made no impression on him at the business end.

Spode Beaten. The day's programme closed with the Progress Handicap, seven of the acceptors parading. Spode was a better favourite than Buoyant in the best betting raco of the day. Buoyant took charge after the start and led along the back from Spode, Erin-go-Bragh. and Pickaninny, The leader wai dona Tith
