THE AUSTRALIAN TESTS.
ENGLAND'S NEED OF BOWLERS
(ET CABLB— fSISI ASSOCIATION—COPTRIGHT.) (AUSTBALIAH AND . K.Z CABLI ASSOCIATION.!
LONDON, January 4.
The "Daily News," in a leader, says:— "Tho English selectors must havo concluded that the Marylcbone touring team hardly afford the nucleus of a team representing England for the next Australian tour. There is nothing in their bowling that suggests terrors to Australian batsmanship. If wo desire to retain the honours, we must do much more than provide bowlers to feed the monstrous averages of Ponsford —the most remarkable and most heart-breaking scoring machine ever invented."
M.C.C. BEAT SOUTH AFRICA. (BT CABLE—FBESS ASSOCIATION— COPXRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) CAPE TOWN, January 4. For tho Test match, M.C.C. v. South Africa, tho weather was fine and the attendance small. The wicket and outfield were slow. The balance of the Englishmen were dismissed in 21 minutes. Wyatt played strenuous cricket, but was lucky. He contributed 58 of the 08 added by the two last wickets. Geary was suffering from elbow trouble, and did not play, thus weakening the attack. South Africa required 312 runs, with 275 minutes to do it, but failed, England winning by 87 runs, with half an hour to spare. _ (M.C.C. in their first innings made 133 and in the second innings 428. South Africa mado 250 and £24.]
SHEFFIELD SHIELD.
LUCKY WIN FOR N.S.W.
(BI CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.) (AUSTBALIAS AND N.Z. CABLB ASSOCIATION.) (Received January sth, 9 p.m.) SYDNEY,' January 5. New South Wales in their second inniDgs against Queensland lost, eight wickets for 100 (Phillips 29). Bowling for Queensland, Nothling took five for 39 and Thompson ono for five. New South Wales won by 363 runs on the firßt innings. Queensland made a remarkable oirort to win,'time alone beating them, as under the Sheffield Shield rules only two hours and a half' of play is allowed to-day. Thundery weather, a very bad light, and the state of the wicket favoured the bowlers when the play resumed. Nothling bowled in deadly fashion, and wicket after wicket, fell. At one stage seven were down for 74; Tho remaining batsmen, however; playing purely on the ue« fensive. managed to last out time, and 2scw South Wales scored a lucky win. _ I New South "Wales in their first innings made 639. Queensland made 276 m their lirst innings and followed-on for 590.]
