MILFORD LAGOON ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL PICNIC. A beautiful morning developed into a nice summer day for the New Tear Day picnic, 1928, of the Milford Lagoon Recreation Association, The president (Mr T. Greelish) and his staff have, during the past year, experienced anxious times. The. erosions caused by swollon tributaries and rivers (the Temuka and Opihi) have washed away valuable land held in trust for public recreation purposes, and in order to prevent further damage protective works, at much expense, have been erected. Much of the labour has been voluntary, but even so the executive havo incurred an outlay which, but for public voluntary contributions, would have loft them with a larger debit balance than they now have. The New Year sports at this favourite resort on a fine day are always a big asset, and judging from the attendance much of the financial difficulty will bo removed. The bullock roasting in the Maori manner proved to be as popular as ever. Tho Arowhenua Maoris, in native costume and fashion, gave hakas, poi dances, and an old time Maori welcome to a visiting tribe to the delight of all present. The baby show, as usual, attracted much attention, there being six classes, three for baby boys and three for baby girls. The Cinderella dance in tho Drill Hal! at night was as popular an event as ever. The following are the results of a good sports programme:— Boys, 12 years and under —Jeth Caesar 3, M. Tarrant 2, N.
