A challenge match for the Wilding Shield wbb commenced to-day between Auckland (challengers) and Wellington (holders) in a northerly gale. Results, Wellington players mentioned* first':— SINGLES. A. L. France lost to A. W. Sim, 9-7, 1-6, 3-6. C. E. Malfroy beat E. L. Bartleet, 8-6, 6-2. D. G. France lost to L. G. Knott, 6-0, 3-6, 5-7. ■ N. B. 0. Wilson beat N. G. Sturt, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. DOUBLES. A. L. Franco and N. R. C. Wilson beat E. L. Bartleet.and A. W. Sim, 6-1, 1-6, 6-0. C. E. Malfroy and D. G. France beat N. G. Sturt and E. G. Knott, 6-4, 6-4. SOUTH CANTERBURY CONTEST. Something of a surprise' was occasioned at the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's annual New Year tournament, which commenced on Saturday, when Miss Patterson, of Otago, was defeated by MiBS R. Rolleston, of Timaru, in the final game of the first round of the ladies' singles. Miss Rolleston's service was particularly strong, and won her the match. 0. Angas (Christchurch) reached the fourth round, defeating Hawkins 6-2,' 7-5, and Rolleston 6-3, 6-3. The tournament was continued to-day, and will be carried on until Wednesday.
