New Year Hurdles. lord -Star was « good favourite for ill" Hurdles. Archibald was always well up iti ,1,.- running, and be l-d over the last round t„ win bv"a length from Glenotus, with Ked l'„,ret. half a length back third. Lord Star v'-ji* elo-e up fourth, and then 'Mine Sir I,'osc berrv (ilf-notus came into second place lrom the rear of the field and outstayed Kcd Comet." who had run in front with. Archibald throughout. Lord .Star was well back early nnd made „P a lot of ground. lie stayed on well, but the weight stopped him. Sir Rosebcrry was never prominent. Racing Club Handicap. ■l.'apiT was the lmn-starter in the Kiicing Club jintidicap. Star Stranger wjs ahvay,, fiivonrite, and ne.U in order ol betting were IV'-aw, Mask, and Hattlenicnt. I'apatu, Cohe-io'„' Scat, and Uenuanee were m the van earlv, with Mandane well «]>. The lastnamed went back i.assin- the six flirting liost. Count Cavour, Star .Stranger, and J egauav becoming more prominent. Scat, Pftpatu, and EJennanee were still at the head of affairs: turning for Home. Star Stranger ioinctl the leaders entering Hie straight, nnd lie otitslaycd the field to win comfortablv. Papatu was always handy, but Star Stranger had his measure m the straight. Bcnnance, as at liiecarton. just failed to stay it right out after looking a roval prospect as they turned for home. Ho pulled up well. Battlement stayed on well into fourth place from a long way back. He carried T. Green at the cost of 51b overweight. Pogaway and Eden Hall ran. fair races, but were not good enough. Count Cavour might have been hard to beat, tor he was going particularly well at the time of his mishap, and was running alongside Star Stranger, with the latter on the outer. Mask was in trouble early, and again in the mi.v-up with Count Cavour. His backers got a poor run, but lie finished on. Great Northern Derby. The scratchings for the Derby were Ark IJoval, Don Jose, Pagauelli, Singleton, and Goiden Wedding, leaving a field of eight, Agrion was a red-hot favourite, carrying over £6OOO, as against £I9OO on the second favourite, Great Charter, who had a slight call on Laughing Prince. The other 'liiecarton pair. Satrap and Jlartitrraa, were next, both at good prices. Great Charter made all the running from Agrion, with Cimobue and Laughing Prince next, the field being closely bunched, Satrap whipping in. Down the back they strung out a bit, but approaching the half Satrap and Martarma moved forward, and were with Agrion and Laughing Prince behind Great Charter as they were running for the straight. Agrion got' to Great Charter once they were iu line, and Martarma and Laughing Prince then began to worry him. Barry drew his whip a furlong from home, but Agrion was a beaten colt, and was passed by both Martarma and Laughing Prince. The latter looked dangerous for a moment, but, shaken up, Martarma drew away from him and won by a length, Agrion being the best part of two lengths further back. Great Charter was fourth, followed by Cimabue, and lu the Shade, Satrap, and Thaw. Agrion was a beaten horse a fair way from home. Whatever his condition may provide in the way of excuses, he was beaten on his merits. Martarma came from the back and fairly outstayed his field. On Wednesday it looked as if he should hayo been much harder to beat in the King's Plate, and his running to-day confirmed that impression. Mr J. Porter and his trainer, F. Christmas, were greatly elated over their handsome victory. Laughing Prince ran a fine race, but, as at Kiccarton, again proved just short of Derby class. Great Charter and Cimabue were always prominent, but never dangerous over the concluding stages. Satrap was very much on his toes prior to the race. He got away poorly, and was well back till he made his run at the halfmile. It was a very short-lived effort, for he almost immediately dropped back agaiu. County Handicap. Paper Boy was the favourite for the hack seven furlong event, with money for King Arch and The Immigrant. Paper Boy and The Immigrant moved out first, but Paper Boy soon drifted back, Ripon- Abbey joining The Immigrant in front, and leading from King Arch to the straight. Here Ripon Abboy dropped out. The Immigrant was challenged by King Arch, and Paper Boy came again on the scene. The Immigrant held his place, and won by the best part of a length from Paper Boy, who got up and beat King Arch by half a head. Winsome Boy, Antrim Boy, and Baby Bun were next. The Immigrant accomplished a fast gallop, and was ahvars the winner. He is an Kng-lish-bred horse owned by Mr W. S. Glenn, M.P., and his career has been curtailed through unsoundness. He won at the recent Takapuna Meeting. To-day he carried 21b overweight. Paper Boy again ran a good race, and so did King Arch, who carried 31b overweight. Newmarket Handicap. With Awarere, Royal Damon, Paperchase. and Kingfield out of the open sprint, only seven were left, and backers went for Aussie and Money Order. Aussie and Nancy Lee began best, and Aussie led the mare to the straight. Money Order_ was slowaway, and was second last at the half. He ran up entering the straight, and made n showing on the outer, but Aussie was always going well, ■ and beat Nancy Lee by half n length, with Silvermine a similar distance away third. Money Order weakened again at the finish into fourth place. Town Guard and Receipt were next. Aussie was admirably handled by A. Tinker, and won decisively. Nancy Leo is a fine sprinter, and will not always be up against horses like the winner. Silvermine ran a fair race, but was not good enough. Money Order was never going well. Glasgow Handicap. Paperchase and the Lo Choucas —Ti Tree bracket were the favourites in the concluding event, in which the pool exceeded £l7 000. King Lu was first out, and led with Paperchase and Ti Tree to the half, where Ti Tree dropped back. King Lu led into the- straight, and although Paperchase challenged strongly, King Lu always had her measure, and won by the best part of a length. The pair were never in danger of being caught. Sir Archie was two lengths back third, and Archeno fourth, then 'Royal Damon, Ti Tree, and Centrepiece. The winner was always going as if success were assured, and he won decisively. Paperchase ran one of her usual good solid races, but was no match for King Lu. Outside this pair the most likely improvers are Royal Damon and Centrepiece. The latter got out well, but dropped back in the middle stages. Over the concluding portion of the journey ho made up a lot of ground, but he hung out in the straight. King Lu paid a great price considering his recent good form.
