♦ — N.Z. RECIPIENTS. KNIGHTHOOD FOR MR JUSTICE STRINGER. ;PBSSS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.'. WELLINGTON, January 2. His Excellency the Governor-General has announced that on the occasion of the New Year his Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to confer upon the gentlemen named the honours mentioned hereunder:— Knight Bachelor. The Honourable Thomas Walter Stringer, K.C., lately Judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand. Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.). Mr George Craig, LL.M., Comptroller of Customs in New Zealand. Mr Albert Fuller Ellis, New Zealand, Commissioner on the British Phosphate Commission.

The Hon. Sir T. W. Stringer was born in Christchurch on November 4th, 1555, and educated at the Boys' High School and Canterbury College. He was articled to T. I. Joynt, and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in 1879. He was appointed Crown Solicitor for Canterbury in 1893, K.C. 1907, and a Judge of the Supreme Court in 1913, retiring quite recently.

Mr George Craig, LL.M. was born in Dunedin in 1873. He was educated at the Otago Boys' High School and Victoria College, gaining his LL.M. degree in 1915. He joined the Customs Department in Timaru as a cadet, gradually rising to his present position, which he has held for several years. Mr Albert Fuller Ellis is a native of Queensland, and is 59 years of age. He discovered the phosphate deposits on Nauru and Ocean Islands in 1900 when in the employ of the Pacific Phosphate Company of London. Subsequently he was made island mAiager and local director for Australia and New Zealand, being appointed Commissioner for New Zealand on the British Phosphate Commission in 1920.

Knights Bachelor. John Longstaff, artist. Henry Scott, Attorney-General of Fiji. Other conferments are;— Knight of St. Michael and St. George. Sir Edward Grigg, Governor of Kenya. Barons. George Gibbs, Conservative member of Parliament for West Bristol, and Government Whip. The Eight Hon. Sir Frederick Lugard, Colonial Governor, and now British member of the Permanent Mandates Commission. Baronet. James Gomer Berry, newspaper proprietor. Knight. Edward German, the composer. Knight of the Victorian Order. Sir Edward Elgar, composer. Grand Cross of the Order of Bath. General Sir Alexander Godley. Air Porce Cross. Lieutenant Carr, for his attempted non-stop flight to India. Sir Philip Whistler Street, who is 64 years of age, was called to the Bar of New South Wales in 1886, and became a puisne Judge of the Supreme Court in 1907. He was appointed Chief Justice in 1925. He has been a member of the Senate of Sydney University since 1915.

Sir John Longstaff, one of the best known of Australian painters, was born in Victoria in 1862. In 1887 he won tho first travelling scholarship awarded by the Trustees of the Melbourne Gallery, and proceeded to Paris. Among his most noted pictures are "The Young Mother," "The Woman in Black," "The Sirens," and the historic picture, "The Burke and Wills Expedition." He is also a notablo portrait painter, his subjects including their Majesties King Edward VII. and Queen Alexandra. . Sir Henry Milne Scott, who is 51 years of age, has been president of the Suva Chamber of Commerce since 1908, Mayor of Suva since 1915, and a member of the Legislative Council of Fiji since 1908. He is a life member of the Royal Colonial Institute. Sir Edward Grigg was born in 18 19, and, after a distinguished career at New College, Oxford, joined the editorial staff of "The Times" in 1903. He served in tho Great War with the Grenadier Guards, and was military secretary to the Prince of Wales during his tour of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand in 1919. From 1921 to 1922 he was private secretary to Mr Lloyd George, and was a member of the House of Commons from 1922 to 1925, in which year he was appointed Governor of Kenya Colony. Sir James Gomer Berry is deputychairman of Allied Newspapers, Ltd., Graphic Publications, Ltd., and Cassel and Co., Ltd. He is also associated as part proprietor with a number of other journals. Sir Edward German was born in Shropshire in 1862, and entered the Boyal Academy of Music in 1880. For some years he played first violin in the principal orchestras, but later devoted himself entirely to composition. He has written music for a large number of light operas, and collaborated with Sir Arthur Sullivan and Sir W. S. Gilbert.

Sir Edward Elgar, who is 70 years of age, has been Master of the King s Musick since 1924, and holds honorary degrees in universities throughout the world. His publications include "The Dream of Gerontius," "The Apostles, "King Olaf," etc. General Sir Alexander Godley commanded the New Zealand Expeditionary Force throughout the Great War, and Mas Commander-in-Chief of the British Armv on the Ehine from 1922 to 1924"

RIGHT OF RECOMMENDATION. (Received January 2nd, 7 p.m.) SYDNEY. January -■ The Federal Cabinet has restored to the States the right to make recommendations to the Home authorities in regard to the granting of titles to residents of a State.
