A SUMMER DAY.

fr „... SUNSHINE AND A NOR'-WESTER. There were few places yesterday where people might obtain a brief respite from the scorching heat in the City. At an early hour in the morning the heat began to make itself felt, and before the day was spent a temperature of 87-2 degrees had been registered. Even at 5 p.m., when it is usual that conditions become more pleasant, the thermometer was still at the 81.5 degrees mark. To make mutters more trying a moderate nor'-wester was blowing, sending clouds of dust through the City. It was Christchurch's first taste of real summer heat. , Before 10 a.m. all tram-cars to the seaside resorts were crowded, while hundreds of motor-cars left for the cooler surroundings of the country. The less fortunate ones who had business to attend, clad themselves in their scantiest wear. At the beaches, long curling breakers made swimming difficult, but the crowds were only too glad to wallow in the cool waters on tho outskirts. It was an ideal day for sun-bathing, the temperature in the sun being 149 degrees. All business places which sold refreshments were rushed, icecream being the main requirement. As usual, there are those who combine business with pleasure, several thefts being reported from the dress-ing-sheds. Similar thefts are reported every season, and people should take warning and not leave valuables in the sheds. One man had the misiortune to lose port of his clothing and also the money from his pockets.
