ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. .Mr J. Mulvey, postmaster, is at present on leave, and Mr J. P. Hanratty is acting-postmaster. Mr J. H. McKay, supervisor of the Telegraph Department, is spending his annual vacation in Wellington. Mr J. Brown is relieving. Mr 0.. W. Brannigan, who has been stock inspector in Ashburton district for the past 30 years, retires on superannuation at the end of the year. He will be succeeded by Mr J. W. Smith, of To Kuiti. Mr J. W. Blacker, clerk of the Magistrate's Court, Cromwell, formerly of Ashburton, visited here yesterday, and went on to Westport.
Streams Bridged. | With the completion of the concrete bridges cm the Mayficld-Rangilata road and on the road between Mt. Hutt and Pudding Hill bridge all the streams between the Rangitata bridge aud Rakaia Gorge- are now bridged, and (he roads being in good order the main highway Sheffield-Arundel 13 a «ood route for those not wishing to pass through Ashburton travelling north and south. Before the new bridge was constructed over the race on the Rangi-tata-Mayfield road this crossing was a source of danger to travellers. Main Highway. During the past two weeks the maintenance plants of the Ashburton County Council have been devoting a great deal of attention to the main highway from Rangitata bridge via Hinds and Ashburton to the Rakaia bridge, and the whole of this road has received attention, the result being that it is in excellent order for Iho holiday traffic. Tennis Tournament. Further matches were played in the Mid-Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-As-sociation's Christmas tournament yesterday morning. The finals of the men's and women's singles in the A grade have yet to be decided. Yesterday's play resulted as follows: A GRADE. Ladies'- Singles Handicap. .Semi-final—Miss D. Vcsty beat Miss X. Percy 9-2. Men's Doubles Handicap. Semi-final—G. C. and C. J. Bonnington beat P. Vesty and S. Hollobon 9-C. Final—G. C. and C. J. Bonnington beat S. and R.. Carleton 9-8. 'Combined Doubles Handicap. Semi-final—Miss D. Vesty and P. Vcsty beat Miss Kl Robilliard and F. Smith by default. Final—Miss Vcsty and P. Vesty beat Miss E. Stewart and G. C. Bonnington 9-6. Bible Class Conference. . The Presbyterian Summer Bible Class Conference opened yesterday morning with young women's and Sunday School teachers' sectional meetings. The former opened with an address by Miss M. Shannon (travelling secretary) on "When and'Hdw to Study, the Bible," I in which she emphasised, that the Biblo should not be read as history. It should bo studied with imagination.' Tho meeting: then broke up into study groups to consider biblical questions. • The.first of a series of addresses on "Child Study" vr.as given at the latter meeting by Mr J. Reid. In his remarks he stated'that the-Sunday School teachers hada-most delicate work,, as a young child required to be nurtured from infancy to lead a Christlikc life. In the past the church had been losing be'eauso of its neglect of the children. . The evening session in St. Andrew's [ Hall was open to tho public and was occupied with an address entitled, "Our Great Guest," by the Rev. R. M. Ryburn.
