The tie in the Christchurch Amateur championship—a by-championship played at the Christmas tourney arranged by the Christchurch Golf Club—was played off yesterday between E. J. Puniphrcy and E. M. Macfarlane. Macfarlane won with a score of 71, against Pumphrey's 76. The cards were: Macfarlane: Out: 443555353 .. ■...■ 37 In: 445243444 .. ~.; 34 Pumphrey: Out: 344844453 .. • ■ 3f) In: 444354544 .. •• 37 Tho championship is decided on two rounds of medal play. This play took place on Tuesday when Macfarlane and Pumphrey tied with scores of 151. The play-off was decided by one round of medal play. At Land's End Pumphrey sliced out of bounds twice, which cost him four strokes. But for this pieco of bad luck his card, would have been <-. As Macfarlane's 71 contained a2 at Old Nick, it is obvious that generally there was nothing between the two players.
