Melbourne, November 28.—Speaking at a Scottish luncheon, the Governor of Victoria, Lord Somcrs, claimed that his pedigree entitled him to represent the British race in general. He had respectively French, Irish, and Scots greatgrandfathers and an English mother. Insurance Against Bain. Newcastle, November 28. —The Jockey Club, by the payment of a premium of £6O, insured its meeting oh Saturday for £BOO against ten points of rain falling by a certain time on Saturday, but when the time limit expired the gauge registered only 9J points. Immediately afterwards torrential rain fell, causing a postponement of the Meeting. Search for Rare Trees. New York, November 27.—Mr James Davey, the tree expert, has sailed on a world tour to hunt for rare trees, with a view to their introduction into America. His itinerary includes Australia and Tasmania. Civic Commission Bill. Sydney, November 28.—The Governor, Sir Dudley de Chair, has given his assent to the Civic Commission Bill, which abolishes the Sydney City Council. The Bill operates from to-morrow. Wireless in Australia. Melbourne, November 28th.—The Industrial Registrar has called a compulsorv conference between the Amalgamated Wireless Company and various wireless services to discuss several outstanding disputed matters.
