RICCARTON HIGH PRESSURE WATER SCHEME.
TO THE EDITOR O? THE PBESS. Sir, —At the public meeting last week, the Council's strongest argument was for fire protection. It must be noted that by the time the brigade got to the spot, a fire would have a good hold, and all that could be saved would bo the house next door, which is far enough away to save itself. Bv the time the full rates for Waimakarin Trust and sewer extension are upon us, we will have more than enough to pay.—Yours, etc., RATEPAYER. TO THE EDITOB 0T THE TBESS. Sir,—At a meeting held in the Town Hall last Thursday evening and called by the Borough Council to explain their high pressure water scheme those present were given to understand that the scheme was being put forward at the request of some of the ratepayers and was backed by the local Citizens' Association. As the Citizens' Association carries quite a fair amount of weight in Our district I think it only fair that the ratepayers should know before the poll is taken that the members of the Association have not had an opportunity to fully discuss the scheme, and that at its last meeting ' thcro was no motion for or against the scheme. It is quite incorrect to say that tho Citizens' Association is backing the proposal in view of the fact that the Council promised to let the Association have a copy of the engineer's report as soon as it came to hand, and that report was never submitted, although it was in the hands of the Council as far back as last April. There is little doubt that a large majority of the members of tho Citizens' Association is definitely opposed to the present high pressure water scheme. —Yours, etc.. EARWIG.
