ONE NEW CRUISER.
BRITAIN'S NAVAL PROGRAMME. (ST CABLE —PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPYBJGHT.) (atjstbaiiax and h.z. cabli association.) LONDON, November 16. The Hon. W. C. Bridgeman, replying to a question, announced the laying down of only one cruiser during the present financial yea.r. The Ministry had decided that in view of the situation disclosed at the Geneva Naval Conference that it was unnecessary and undesirable to lay down the other two on the programme this vear.
Mr Bridgemaim announcement means a saving on the "A" class cruiser of £1,975,000, and on the "B" class cruiser of £1,580,000. The life of a cruiser is theoretically fifteen years, and the upkeep about £250,000 a year. The decision of the Admiralty, therefore, means a saving to the taxpayers of over £11,000,000 in the coming year, apart from repairs.
