LOCAL CLUB FIXTURES.

Christchurch Club —Saturday, November 19th: Stroke handicaps. November 20th: Representative match, Canterbury against Christchurch Club team. December 26th, 27th, and 28th: Christmas tournament. Avondale Club—Saturday, November 19th: Medal handicap. NOTES OF THE DAY. (By "Jigger.'") The president's v. captain's team match, set down on the programme of Christchurch Club for Saturday, November 26th, has been postponed until after the opening of the new clubhouse. Mrs 11. Collinson, New Zealand lady champion, addled to her laurels last week by annexing the Feilding Ladies' Club Championship. In the final round, of 18 holes, the two finalists, Mrs Collinson and Mrs J. S. Tingey, were all square at the eighteentji hole, but Mrs Collinson played the nineteenth a little better than her opponent and won the title by the close margin of one up.

There will be no draw for the stroke handicap to be played at Shirley on Saturday, owing to the large number of members wishing to attend the cricket match, but instead players are to arrange their own games and starting times and return their cards in the usual manner.

It has been definitely dtecided to hold the Professional Golfers' Association tournament on the Highfield links, Timaru, on Wednesday, Tlmrsday, and Friday, February 22nd, 23rd, and 24th next. The New Zealand Golf Association will, as usual, provide £l5O towards the prize money, and the Timaru Golf Club will provide the balance. The programme has been drafted on the same lines as the programme of last year's meeting at Rotorua.

Blow many golfers complete their back swing before starting the down swing? Not so many, especially in times of stress. One of the common faults of the game is a back swing that gets away too., quickly and that is halted before it reaches the end of its trip. It is usually halted by starting the dbwn swing ahead of time and by throwing the hands and body too far in front of the club-head's downward blow. A completed back swing is the basis of a good down swing, and it is something to watch for.

The Avondale Club will hold - the first, of its series of summer monthly events at the Avondale links on Saturday afternoon, when a medal handicap will be played. Post entries will be received, and competitors will arrange their own partners and starting times. On this occasion an invitation is extended to all members and the emergencies of the Canterbury representative golf team, which is to play against the team picked by the Christchurch Club during the week-end, to compete in this event.

Miss Joyce AVetliered., one of the leading lady golfers of the world, writing about the movements of the drive in the "Golfers' Magazine/' says: "As soon as the clubhead begins to move, the left wrist must be allowed to start and turn gradually over towards the body. This rolling of the left wrist i 3 similar to the wrist action used in turning the handle of a door from left to right. Taking it for granted that the head has been kept still, it will come naturally to the player to allow her left hip to turn slightly outwards, her left shoulder to come round until the point of it is in line with her left eye and the ball, and her left knee to bend. At the top of the swing, if the actions have been correct, the left arm will be nearly straight, the right, elbow will be close to the player's side, the toe of the club should be pointed towards the ground, and the shaft of the club should be in a horizontal position. This_ last point is of vital importance, as, if the club is allowed to drop beyond this position, the suing is too full, and the player is inclined to lose control. The club must come down the way it goes up."

At the meeting of the Golf Council, held in Wellington on November 7th, one of the affiliated clubs wrote enquiring as to the status of a man employed as an assistant greensman, and as to whether he could be a member of the club in which he is employed. 'Hie secretary's reply was confirmed to the effect that there is no doubt whatever that a man's working as a greonsman

nnS 8 , I l ofc , il !, an y way affect kis status, and that the question of whether a man's poutwn as a greensmanto a club is incompatible -with his position as a member of the club is entirelv one for the club to decide, and would probably be governed by the special circumstances of the case, that is to say, whether the man himself (apart from his occupation) is considered a dc-sirable member of the club. It wns also pointed out that whilst a profess.onal can by a ruling of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, bo elected an honorary member of his club, a greensman, being an amateur, may be elected ai. ordinary member.

The New South Wales Golf Council has requested the following players to advise whether they will be available to go to New Zealand if selected for the Kirk Wmdeyer Cup team, in January next—Manly: E. L. Apperly. A. M. Thorn, \\. C. Sturrock, 6. R. Wines. Rose Bay: C. H. Fawcett F. G. Murdock, G- T. Baleombe \' E ~ n^i\ vs i AV - K " ndle - Australian Golf Club: P. S. Jones, J. R. D. Scott, R. K. The team selected by tiie Christchurch Club to meet the representative team from the various clubs in Mid and North Canterbury at the Shirley links durinjg the coming week-end lias every appearance of being equal to the task allotted to it. No doubt the match would have been of greater interest if overy available man, with a reasonably low handicap, that could have been used against the Christchurch team, had been used, but, on the other hand, it is sure to be a contest of much interest, and some of the matches are sure to be close and interesting.

The following players have been chosen to represent the Christchurch Club, without any attempt to place them in the order in which they will be chosen to play:—E. M. Macfarlane, C. A. Seymour, R. A. Wilson, C. R. J. Ward, H. W. Macfarlane, A. L. Cropp, R. W. Morgan, L. H. Campbell, A. R. Blank, E. T. Shores, R. T. Tosswill, G. W. Haverfield, L. A. Dougall, C. A. Quane, M. H. Godby, L. E. Carter, W. P. Anderson, E. J. Pumphrey, F. G. Bristed, and W. T. IX Harman. The change in the line up of the Canterbury team, caused by the inability to play on the part of H. Phillips'and A. Rei'd, of the Hanmer Club, is to bo regretted, but the team will not be weakened by the substitution ot' the two Ashburton players, C. O. Roberts and J. T. Smith, who, on their play of the season, were certainly entitled to places in the team on the original selection. The two new emergencies selected are D. McMillan/ of Darfield, and Iy. Clark, of Hagley.
