FIGHTING IN CHINA.

NATIONALIST VICTORY.

FOLLOWS FIVE DAYS* BATTLE,

(by cable—press association—copybjoht.) (Stdxet "Sun" Sebvicb.)

(Received November 9th, 7.45 p.m.)

SHANGHAI, November 8.

The Nationalists claim a major victory in Liuho-ko Honan, following five days' fighting. General Feng Yu-hsiang reports the capture of four armoured trains, with 20,000 prisoners, 45 cannon, 100 trench mortars, and a similar number of machine guns. Ho also states he has reached within three miles of the outside of Esuchow Fu, an important stragetic railway centre, and avers ho will sweep Shantung clear of Northerners within a fortnight. The report is of purely Nationalist origin, but in the absence of Northern denials, it is probably true. REPORT OF VICTORY CONFIRMED. (Received November 10th, 1.35 a.m.) SHANGHAI, November 9. As confirming the report of General Feng Yu H'siang's spectacular victory northern dispatches report that the Governor of Shantung, Chang Chung Chang, by throwing in 30,000 reinforcements, stemmed the tide of defeat, renewing the morale of the Northerners. Local Chinese are at a perfect loss to explain the situation, owing to the fact that the Christian General is eventually fighting instead of betraying his colleagues. They regard the Northern position as still very grave.
