Young, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Harold Creighton, a steward in_ the liner Remuera, was charged with having, about October 10th, stolen four £5 notes and three £1 notes, the property of Ellen A. Leach, a second-saloon passenger. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant J. W. McHolra said the accused was a steward in the second-saloon. Miss Leach had worn the money in a belt, but on the day of the theft she had left the belt and money in her cabin. Accused took the money and threw the belt away. The owner had, fortunately, kept the numbers of the notes, and it was through this that accused was. detected when trying to change a £5 note. Creighton had been at sea for seven years, and his previous discharges were good. He had a mother and two brothers to sup-, port in England. The chief officer of the Remuera, Mr T. Pilcher, stated that of late the conduct of accused had not been, good. At Wellington on Monday he had been under the influence of liquor. The Bench said that apparently accused had yielded to sudden temptation. Most of the money had been returned. Accused would be ordered to refund £3 which was missing, and to come up for sentence when called upon.
