BLUE NILE DAM.

DISPUTE OVER CONTRACT.

(BT CABLE—PRBSS ASSOCIATION—COPTBIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.)

NEW YORK, November 7

Officials of the J. C. White Corporation have expressed surprise at the international sensation created by the Tzana Dam project, with the Egyp-t-ion Cabinet thoroughly aroused, and British officials regarding the matter as most serious.

Officials of the White Corporation said: "We have been assured that there is 110 clause in the treaty which would prohibit the project. _ There is a clause whereby Abyssinia grants Great Britain the first option 011 any Government loans; but the Tzana Dam project does not involve a Government loan, consequently we do not see what possible objection the British Foreign Office can have. Our project iu removed from any political motive. It is purely an engineering matter." The Corporation officials declared that both Great Britain and Abyssinia would be ultimate beneficaries.

[A previous New York message stated that the J. G. White Engm. eering Corporation had announced it would begin operations immediately to build a dam costing 20,000,000 dollars, on the Blue Nile, Lake Tzana.]

U.S. GOVERNMENT ATTITUDE. (Received November Bth, 8.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, November 7. The New York "Sun's" Washington correspondent states that it was said at the State Department to-day, that the White Engineering Corporation has the full backing of the United States Government in its proposal to build the dam. Reports from Cairo that the Egyptian Government is aroused over what is termed an unfriendly act are discredited, and it is pointed out that when the facts are learned, the affair will not appear so important as the cable would indicate.

The Abyssinian Government representative received the approval of the State Department before concluding the agreement with the White Corporation.

The State Department understands that matters are being discussed in London with a view to reaching an agreement.
