NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. 1 he prize-winners at the Oddfellows' euclire tournament on Monday night were: Ladies, Miss M. Wheeler 1, Mrs L. Walls 2; men. Mr A. Cooper 1, Mr H. Harper 2. The social committee of the Rangiora Volunteer Fire Brigade have tor a long time contemplated purchasing a bilhaid taole lor the use of members, no definite steps being taken, however, until lecently, when an opportunity presented itself to buy one at a reasonable tiguie, which was taken advantage ot'. As they have not sufficient funds to pay for the table, the committee have accepted the offer of the Kaiapoi Male Voice Choir to give a concert in the Town Hall on Monday next. The choir will be assisted by' .several Christchurch artists, and the Rangiora orchestra.

KAIKOURA. Rain set in on Monday evening and was still falling yesterday morning. Mr W. Trolovc, "The Shades," lias purchased from the well-known Studholme stud six pure-bred red poll heifers, dual purpose cattle which do well on the east coasc of this district.

The Rev. John Bissett, of Glasgow, evangelistic preacher for the New Zealand Presbyterian Church, began a fortnight's mission on Sunday. Although summer time prevails, the local cricketers have not put in an appearance for practice and members are wondering when another match is to be arranged. At a meeting of members of the Kaikoura Tennis Club, Mr A. Howard presiding. the report and balance-sheet were adopted. It was decided to topdress No. 2 court. Mr T. Barry (Christchurch) was elected delegate to the Canterbury Tennis Association. During the afternoon Miss Rita Jackson was presented with a handsome vase by members of the club, as a gift prior to her departure from the district.

Mr P. Acton-Adams, Reserve Station, is confined to his home with illness. Miss E. Maclde was unfortunate enough to slip off a rock at Oaro 011 Sunday, cutting a leg, the wound necessitating five stitches being put in. Christchurch people who intend to camn on the foreshore north and south of Kaikour.i should communicate with the County Council, which body will allot camping sites.

CULVERDEN. A meeting of ratepayers was held to discuss the advisability of bringing electricity into the Amuri County. Mr I l ' H. Toogood, electrical engineer, was present and outlined the scheme. Ho said it was intended to bring the Lin© across the Waitohi river near Island Hills, so that it would pass through tli3 more populated parts ot the county. A large number of questions were satisfactorily answered by the speaker, and at the close of the meeting a vote of thanks was accorded him. It was unanimously agreed that steps be taken to have the county electrified.

The Culverden Defence Rifle Club held a shoot for a trophy presented by Mr A. Kingsbury. P. M. Hamilton proved the winner with a total of 79.

Shearing has begun in the district and it appears that a large quantity of wool will be offered at the first wool sale.

A survey was made recently of the Waiau river between the "Bluegums" and Rotlierham by the Public Works engineers for the purpose of ascertaining the possibility of the river overflowing and damaging adjoining property. A groyne is being erected by the settlers concerned, and a deputation waited 011 the Minister to solicit financial assistance from the Government. The deputation received a sympathetic hearing and it is thought that a grant will be made on the work, carried' out.

ASHLEY BANK. The School Committee met on Monday evening. Present: Messrs P. JLindsay (chairman), J. A Petrie. It. Wright, R. Bailey, and E. Beattie. It was resolved to close the school for the Christchurch Show, North Canterbury School Sports' Association's competitions, and for the proficiency examination on November 17th.

The present rains have been very beneficial to the crops, especially oats, which look promising. The wheat and grass now require warmer weather.

GREENDALE. Anniversary services in connexion with the Greendale Baptist Church were celebrated recently, the Rev. E. Evans being the special preacher. At the evening service, Mr and Mrs E. Evans and Mi and Mrs P. Miles gave a quartet. Miss M. Giddings presided at the organ. On Monday evening the tea and public meeting were held, the Rev. E. T. Jones presiding. The following items were contributed: — Pianoforte solo, Miss N. Hopkins (Ashburton); songs, Mesdames C. Mathews and Hopkins (Ashburton); quartet, Mr and Mrs E. Evans, and Mr and Mrs P. Miles (Christchurch); duet, Mesdames 0. Mathews and Hopkins (Ashburton); recitation, the Rev. E. Evans (Christchurch). The report was read by the secretary, Mr H. A. Taege. Short addresses were given by the Revs. E. Evans (Christchurch), C. Mathews (Ashburton). J. T. Jack (Methoclist), and E. T. Jones. At the close of the meeting supper was dispensed by the Bible Class girls, the proceeds "being in aid of a Baptist orphanage.

HORORATA. At the weekly euchre tournament in aid of tho school prize funds, the winners were: Ladies: Mrs H. Parker 1, Mrs Timmings 2. Men: Mr R. Gray 1, Mr D. Adams 2. it the monthly meeting of the Mothers' Union, Mrs Barwick, of Christchurch, gave an address oh "Prayer.'' Afternoon tea was dispensed.

The Gleuroy tennis team played a friendly match with the Hororata B team on the Hororata courts, the visiting team being defeated. Mr Olds, of the Coalgate postal staff, who is on holiday, is being relieved by Mr J. Mackenzie, of the Hororata postal staff. Mr D. Adams is relieving Mr J. Mackenzie at Hororata.

KIRWEE. At the Kir wee School Social Club's fortnightly meeting, the winners of the card prizes were Mesdames G. Begg and A. Smith and Messrs J. Gallagher and H. Rout. Music for the dance was supplied by Mrs G. Begg, Misses Rout and Begg, and Messrs A. G. Hart and D. Robertson. Mr H. Foster was M.C. Supper was served by the ladies.

The 1 weather has been rather moist during the past few days. Four points of rain fell on Saturday night and seven on Sunday. A north-west wind blew on Monday morning, but in the afternoon the wind changed to the south-west and rain came on, five points falling by S p.m. During the night rain fell heavily at times, .40 inches being registered at 9 a'.m. on Tuesday, with showers still falling. Shearing is being retarded by the damp weather.

OXFORD. At the anniversary services of the Oxford Baptist Sunday School, the preacher at all the services was Rev. J. K. Archer. The singing by the scholars and choir, under the baton of the Rev. H. 11. Turner with Miss Sharman as pianist and Mesdames F. B. Baxter and W. H. Knowles as organists, was a special feature. The celebrations were continued on Monday evening, the Rev. J. K. _ Archer acting as chairman of the meeting. The programme consisted of pianoforte solos, recitations, dialogues, vocal solos, and duets by the scholars and selections by the choir. During the evening the nrizes won by the scholars were presented 'bv the chairman.

AKAROA. At a meeting of the Saleyards Company there were present Messrs J. R. Thac-ker (chairman), E. Hay, W. W. Williams, T. Stewart, and S. J. Vogan. The chairman welcomed Mr "Williams back to the Board after his recent tour ot the Old Country, and congratulated Mr Stewart upon his recovery from his recent severe illness. The secretary presented the report and balancesheet which were passed for presentation to the annual meeting to be held next month.

The Akaroa and Wainui Road Board met ou Saturday at Duvauclielle. There were present Messrs E, A. Mould (chairman), J. Hay--ward, and S. -J. Vogan. The clerk reported that the rights to cut cocksfoot on roadsides had been auctioned at the Duvauclielle Sale and had realised £39 against £2l last year. C. W. Humin was, granted permission to take a water pipe across the Jubilee road on the usual conditions. It was reported that £2OO had been received from Mr G. Armstrong as a donation to the Stoney Bay road formation, and it was decided to spend the amount with the subsidy on improving the road over the Stoney Bay side of the hill. Mr A. Narbey was empowered to have improvements effected to the Purple Peak road oil the eastern side.

A special general meeting of the Akaroa Lawn Tennis Club was held on Monday night, Mr P. G. Riches presiding over a large attendance of members. A motion was carried +!tat the club be registered under the Incorporated Societies Act. The necessary rules wore adopted. Arrangements were made for opening day. which will be held on Thursday next. ' Monday was the hottest day experienced here since April, the maximum heat registered being 76 in the shade. At about nine o'clock a light rain set in, which lasted throughout the night. The following creWs have been selected to represent the Akaroa Boating Club at the forthcoming regattas: —Maiden four, E. Parris, F. Fyfe, F. Phillips, R. Keegan; youths' four, W. Baillie, A. Page, W. and D. Reid.

TAI TAPU. A pleasant afternoon was spent at Mrs Tobeck's home, where the Ladies' Missionary Guild held their monthly meeting. The Rev. T. J. Wallis presided. Songs were contributed by Miss Heinzmann, Mrs C. Watson, Mrs McLachlan, and duets by Misses Watson, Letters were read from the Solomon Islands, giving an interesting description of the successful kindergarten work carried out there by the missionaries. It was decided to hold a garden party at Mr F. Hubbard's on November 19th, and the various stalls were allotted. A dressed sheep was promised for competition. Tai Tapu cricket team met and were defeated by Lincoln College at Rhodes Park. College, batting first, made 175 runs for the loss of six wickets, and Tai Tapu replied with 56 runs. Afternoon tea was provided.

SPRINGSTON SOUTH. Parents and children assembled in the school to bid farewell to Miss Cushla Ryan, who is leaving to take up nursing at the Christchurch Hospital. A very pleasant afternoon was spent. Miss Eileen Chapman, on behalf of the scholars, presented Miss liyan with a gold ' mounted fountain pen. Afternoon tea was served. At a social held in the hall, Miss C. Ryan was the recipient of a hand-bag and cheque from the residents of the district.

SPRINGSTON. At the second of a series of euchre tournaments held by the Gymkhana Club, the prize-winners were: Ladies, Miss Kellan 1, Mrs A. Hamilton 2; men, Mr W. Brown 1, Mr Jones 2. Mr R. Wall supplied the music for the dance, extras being played by Mesdames J. Benny, jun., and Greenslade. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Trott and Mr P. Wilson. Mr E. Neale was M.O.

HALKETT. Light rain fell from the east during the early hours of Sunday, but eased off about 9 a.m. The day remained dull, but no further rain fell. Twenty points were recorded on Sunday night. A light nor'-wester blew for the greater part of Monday, but during the afternoon the wind changed to the southwest, and heavy rain fell overnight, .44 inches being recorded by 9 a.m. on Tuesday, with rain still falling. Feed has become more plentiful during the past fortnight, and the crops are looking well. The showery weather is not being welcomed by those farmers who have commenced shearing, as no sooner are the sheep dry enough to shear than further rain falls.

PREBBLETON. A successful euchre tournament, organised in support of the garden fete to be held next month in aid of the church funds, took place in the Parish Hall. The prize-winners were: Ladies, Mrs W. Goodwin 1, Llrs G. Downey 2; men, Mr G. Downey 1, Mr W. Downey 2. The monthly service in connexion with the Mothers' Union was held in the church, the members afterwards adjourning to the parish room, where they listened to a helpful address given by Mrs H. N. Wright, of Riccarton. It was arranged that the next meeting should take the form of a social and egg afternoon, to be held at the vicarage, the gifts of eggs afterwards to be sent to St. Saviour's Orphanage. A vote of thanks was moved to Mrs Wright for her address. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the members.

LEESTON. The monthly meeting of the Leetson School Committee was held on Monday evening. Mr D. H. Reid presiding. Commencing on Monday next, it was agreed that the school should assemble at 9.30 instead of 9 a.m., to meet the convenience of pupils living at a distance. After the reading of the report of the inspector, Mr F T Evan®, upon the recent examination' of the school, the committee passed a resolution congratulating the headmaster and staff upon the good results achieved It was reported that there were sufficient funds _ on hand to pay the fares of about eighty pupils, who were expected to participate in the u OUn oIt eSC T? ,lOn t0 otira on November 26th. The Ellesmere County Council decided on Monday to hold the official opening of the new Council chambers, which are now out of the builders' hands on November 24th.
