WESTMINSTER ABBEY.

ALTERATIONS OPPOSED. '

(by cable-pbess association—copyright.) (austbalian and n.z. cabl» association.)

LONDON, November 6,

"Leave the Abbey alone," is the almost unanimous comment on the Abbey report. One expert emphasises that, if plans are required for alterations and additions, all the architects of the Empire should be invited to compete, -since Westminster Abbey is an Empire heritage. . Scathing comments are being made about the many existing -effigies which are stated to represent nonentities, unworthy people, and even disreputable characters.

It is suggested that the Abbey should be weeded out, when there would be plenty of room for really famous persons.

It is even asked why there aro any Abbey monuments at all. Sir Martin Conway suggests that there is sufficient space existing in the cloisters for a century's memorials.

It is declared that a modern annexe could only be an imitation, which would be vandalism, while a new north aisle should be ruled out because it would completely alter the extern.■ of the Abbey as it is known throughout the world.
