BRIGHTON BRIDGE

LOAN PROPOSAL, . , "With reference to the proposed new bridge at New Brighton, the By-laws, Finance, and Department Committee reported to the City Council last night that the Minister for Marine had agreed to the insertion of a clause in the Local Legislation Bill giving the Council power to raise a loan for its contribution towards the additional cost of the structure, and also power to raise the original contribution in the sa.u-,3 manner. A clause to this effect had been drafted by the City Solicitor and forwarded to the Minister for Internal Affairs accordingly. The report was adopted. Probable Claims. A letter from the City Solicitor was read as follows: —You may recollect that discussing this matter with you, I referred to the alteration which seemed to be necessary in the Order-in-Couticil under which the bridge is to be built. I spoke to Mr J. A. Flesher (solicitor to the New Brighton Borough Council) 011 this point. He is of opinion that new plans will have to be drawn, and probably application for approval will have to be made de novo. He also told me that the sum of £SOOO mentioned as cost occasioned by the desired alteration of plan, being based on a rough estimate by the Public Wr.rks Engineer, cannot be relied on. and may he varied greatly when new plans are made; also that nn estimate has been made of probable claims which will certainly be considerable. One holding valued at £2OOO will be without any access to the road, and other properties will be in similar position. No allowance has yet been made for costs incurred by the borough in the litigation which was forced upon it, such costs being at present charged to the loan account, and must be provided for, etc. I think it my duty to report the above at the earliest opportunity.

The letter was received, the Mayor stating that the Council would not be re?(ponsible for law costs of any kind.
